Fernando Alonso suffers Aston Martin power unit failure during promising Mexico GP qualifying

Fernando Alonso, Aston Martin AMR26, 2026 F1

Fernando Alonso suffered a frustrating power unit failure during qualifying for the 2026 Mexico City Grand Prix, bringing out the red flag just as Aston Martin appeared capable of producing one of its strongest performances of the season. The Spanish driver was running third in the provisional Q1 standings when a sudden technical problem forced him to stop on track at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.

It was a particularly disappointing setback for Alonso, who had started qualifying with encouraging pace and immediately established himself among the leading drivers. His third-place position suggested that Aston Martin could challenge for one of its best qualifying results of the year, making the unexpected failure all the more frustrating.

Fernando Alonso suffers Aston Martin power unit failure in Mexico GP Q1

The opening phase of qualifying at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez was interrupted by a red flag after Fernando Alonso was forced to bring his Aston Martin to a halt with a power unit problem. The incident ended his progress just as the car was demonstrating promising competitiveness.

Alonso had made an impressive start to the session, quickly moving towards the top of the timing screens and showing the potential to deliver a significant result. However, the sudden technical failure interrupted his run before he could build on that encouraging performance.

Aston Martin reliability problem ruins promising qualifying opportunity

For Fernando Alonso, the timing of the failure made the situation particularly difficult to accept. After a season in which competitive opportunities have been limited, Aston Martin appeared to have found encouraging performance in Mexico City, only for another reliability problem to interrupt its progress.

The disappointment was especially significant because Alonso had already demonstrated his pace on track, occupying third place in Q1 before the incident. What had initially looked like a potentially strong qualifying session instead became another frustrating episode for the Spanish driver and his team.
