Max Verstappen opens up on Mercedes talks and the conditions for a Red Bull exit. Future beyond Milton Keynes: Verstappen reveals what it would take to change teams.

Max Verstappen, Red Bull RB21, 2025 F1

Max Verstappen has revealed new details regarding the possibility of a future move away from Red Bull Racing. The Dutchman spoke candidly about the criteria that would shape such a monumental decision, reflecting on the high-level meetings that took place earlier this year regarding a potential switch to Mercedes and what truly matters to him beyond the cockpit.

Although the 28-year-old is currently under contract with the Milton Keynes-based squad until 2028, speculation linking him to a Mercedes seat intensified throughout the 2025 season. By August, however, the four-time World Champion moved to quell the rumors, confirming his commitment to Red Bull for the 2026 campaign. “I think the time has come to put an end to all these rumors, and for me, it has always been quite clear that I would stay regardless,” he stated shortly before the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Despite that temporary closure, the rumor mill has begun to churn once again. Looking ahead to the performance forecasts for the coming years, Mercedes appears to be in a strong position technically—a factor that naturally attracts a driver focused on adding more world titles to his trophy cabinet. However, Max Verstappen insists that performance is only one piece of the puzzle.

Verstappen’s perspective: More than just speed

Months after confirming his short-term future with Red Bull, Verstappen was questioned by BBC Sport about how seriously he had weighed a transfer. The Dutchman took the opportunity to explain the specific framework he would use to evaluate a future with a different organization.

“For me, it’s not just about F1,” the four-time champion declared. “There are many things that need to fall into place for me to change. Future roles, things like that. So, if I ever decide to leave, it would certainly be a big change for me, because this team is definitely like a second family, and that is not easy to replicate in the same way.”

Max Verstappen emphasized that his career is no longer defined solely by the machinery beneath him. “The change, if I ever make it, isn’t just because I need a faster F1 car or a different environment. There are many things concerning my F1 career and the things I do outside of F1 that must align.”

He also confirmed that the dialogue with rivals was real, though not as aggressive as the media often portrayed. “I won’t lie. Of course, there have been talks. But at the same time, it was all very friendly and open. Nothing more,” Max Verstappen admitted.

The search for the complete driver

Max Verstappen, who successfully won during his GT3 debut at the Nürburgring Nordschleife in September, also touched upon his relentless desire for self-improvement across different disciplines.

“[I try to improve] by always looking at the details, trying to learn about the car, about myself, and doing many things outside of F1 as well. Of course, I drive many different cars externally, and I don’t think that hurts you when you race in F1. So, yes, I’m just trying to become a slightly more complete driver, a bit more versatile,” the 28-year-old concluded.

Max Verstappen’s comments suggest that any future move away from Red Bull will depend on a holistic package that integrates his long-term career goals and his passion for multi-discipline racing. While a faster car is always a draw, the emotional bond with his “second family” at Milton Keynes remains a significant hurdle for any rival team hoping to lure the champion away.
