Helmut Marko has revealed details of Red Bull’s latest meeting, which took place after the Chinese GP. The Austrian team, which was in a dominant position just two years ago, is facing a difficult start to the season, making the need to turn things around increasingly urgent.
Red Bull has delivered the first major shake-up of the season. Horner’s team decided to change its driver lineup after just two rounds, placing Yuki Tsunoda alongside Max Verstappen. Liam Lawson has been demoted to VCARB, where he will share the garage with Isack Hadjar.
This decision was made official following an emergency meeting called by the team after the Chinese GP. Helmut Marko revealed the details of this gathering, which was held out of necessity to return to winning ways. “After returning from China, we held a meeting in Milton Keynes where we discussed when and how the RB21 would become a winning car again.”
The Dutch driver remains central to Red Bull’s plans, as highlighted by the Red Bull advisor. “It was a good conversation between Max and the engineers. We were able to show him the general development direction and the concrete improvements we are making to the car.”
Focusing on on-track performance, Helmut Marko acknowledged the RB21’s clear inferiority compared to McLaren’s car. “The car is difficult to drive, and the setup is not exactly optimal.”
However, the Austrian pointed out a positive aspect for the Milton Keynes team that could serve as a starting point for Red Bull’s recovery. “We noticed in the second half of the race in China that if things go well, as they did for Max at the end, on hard tires we can even be faster than the leaders. To be fair, I must add that Oscar Piastri was certainly not pushing.”
