After the first two GPs of the new season, Aston Martin’s only points have come from Lance Stroll. Fernando Alonso, on the other hand, has suffered two retirements. However, unlike in the past, he has not put additional pressure on the team but has instead placed great trust in its staff, particularly in new engineer Adrian Newey.
In 2024, Adrian Newey officially announced his departure from Red Bull and his move to Aston Martin. He has only been working with the team for a few weeks, but according to Fernando Alonso, he is the missing piece that completes the team’s ideal structure. To highlight the high level of Aston Martin’s personnel, Fernando Alonso even compared the team to the top contenders.
“I think the team lacks nothing compared to the top teams in terms of facilities, personnel, talent, and wind tunnel.” Now, to aim for success, Stroll’s team needs time to understand the car’s weaknesses and improve.
“This is not football. Football is very easy—you get the best field, the best coach, the best players, and in the end, you might win the next match. In F1, you can have the best facilities and the best people, but you still need time to put all the ingredients together and win.”
Aston Martin – Adrian Newey: A synergy that has yet to take off
“We have all been very busy, from testing in Bahrain to Australia, and then straight here to China,” Fernando Alonso explained. What the Spaniard wants is a direct discussion with the engineer who contributed to Red Bull’s many successes and more. “When we return to the factory, we hope to have more time to sit down properly.”
The British team’s goals are not focused on 2025, the last year before the regulatory changes. Adrian Newey is primarily working on the car for the following season when all teams will have to completely overhaul their designs. “I know he is really motivated and fully involved in everything that awaits him in 2026.” Alonso concluded by clarifying that while the British engineer is focused on the next season, he is also keeping an eye on the team’s performance this year.
