Fernando Alonso, like wine
He’ll blow out 44 candles on July 29, but Fernando Alonso isn’t even thinking about stopping or hanging up his helmet.
Even though he’s not having his best season, partly due to an AMR24 that’s clearly far from the frontrunners, the Spaniard still strongly believes in the Aston Martin project, which has gained further credibility in recent weeks with the hiring of Adrian Newey.
Present at a promotional event organized by Cognizant, one of the main sponsors of the English team, the Spaniard responded to a question from an audience member about the possibility of returning to IndyCar in the near future to finally try to win the Indianapolis 500 and thus achieve the long-dreamed-of Triple Crown.
But Fernando Alonso has only one thing in mind, and that is the third Formula 1 world title, which he has been chasing for twenty years now: “There’s something very attractive, which is winning the Monaco GP in Formula 1, winning Le Mans in WEC, and winning the Indy 500 in oval racing.”
“I’ve tried to win the Indy 500 three times, without success. It’s the only one missing, but at the moment it’s not in my plans. Right now, I’m very, very focused on Formula 1. For the next two or three years, I want to win the third world title,” Fernando added, sending the audience into a frenzy – “This is my first and only priority at the moment. After that, given that I’ll be 45-46 years old, I think the commitment required to participate in the Indy 500, the amount of learning I’d have to redo, would be a bit too much.” – the former Ferrari driver admitted.
“That’s what I think now. I can’t say 100%, but it would be too much. As I said, I also have other goals in life.”
Finally, Fernando Alonso expressed his desire to succeed outside the circuits as well: “I think my next challenge will be the Dakar. If I manage to win there, I believe it would be very gratifying for me because I can win in F1, I can win in endurance racing. If I can also win in rallying, it will mean a lot to me as a driver.” – the Spanish driver concluded.
