Ticktum slams Formula 1: “I’m having much more fun in Formula E”
Formula 1 has always been the ultimate dream for every young racing driver. But reaching it requires enormous sacrifices — financially, physically, and mentally. The twenty drivers who make it to the grid today are elite athletes, trained and prepared to perfection, and they begin this intense path already from the junior categories.
For years, Dan Ticktum chased the dream of entering the Formula 1 paddock. He worked his way up through Formula 3 and eventually became a development driver for Williams. However, as he recently admitted during a press conference, that world no longer felt right for him. “If you’re a Formula 1 driver, you don’t have a life. Your whole youth is gone. Here in Formula E, there’s much more time between races to do other things,” he explained.
It was a bitter yet honest reflection from one of Britain’s most controversial talents. After a turbulent journey filled with ups and downs — including his 2015 disqualification in the MSA Formula and the later split from Williams — Dan Ticktum decided to restart his career in Formula E, where he now races for the Cupra Kiro team.
In the electric category, Dan Ticktum says he has finally found a more human and stimulating environment, once again distancing himself from the world of Formula 1. “In Formula E, you have to be mentally strong — the races are like chess matches. But above all, I’m having fun again. Happiness is the most important thing,” he stated.
This shift in perspective goes beyond his racing career and reflects a change in personal philosophy. Dan Ticktum has chosen to prioritize his mental well-being and happiness, without stepping away from competition. Many observers, however, believe that his words also stem from frustration — the frustration of not being able to establish himself in one of the most selective and demanding championships in the world.
