Difficult to stay within the budget cap
Sergio Perez topped the 2024 “crash leaderboard” with nearly $5 million in damages. The problem for Williams is that all three drivers who shared the wheel this season (Alexander Albon, Logan Sargeant, and Franco Colapinto) were not far behind. During the Interlagos weekend alone, Williams recorded damages exceeding $3 million. In Brazil, only three of the 17 incidents across 24 races occurred, but these have brought the British team to its knees in various ways, especially financially.
It seems almost impossible for Williams to stay within the budget cap. Even by reallocating resources from 2025, the team may face penalties for exceeding the limit. In the event of an infraction, it will likely have to pay a fine or comply with other measures decided by the governing body. This follows precedent from 2022 when Red Bull’s minor breach of the 2021 cap resulted in both a sporting penalty (10% fewer wind tunnel hours in 2023) and a monetary fine of €7 million.
According to the German outlet *Auto Motor und Sport,* Williams’ team principal James Vowles proposed a safeguard for teams dealing with damages, often caused by incidents beyond their control (e.g., Albon’s involvement in crashes in Japan and Mexico, where he was not at fault). James Vowles suggested excluding $1 million in damages after the tenth significant accident of the season. However, the FIA rejected this proposal and will not amend the financial regulations.
Thus, it would not be surprising if Williams exceeds the 2024 Formula 1 budget cap.
