Two races and one Sprint. These were enough for Helmut Marko to carry out yet another reshuffle in his career. The swap between Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda is now official, with Christian Horner immediately after the announcement explaining the reason behind Red Bull’s decision.
The results achieved by the New Zealand driver in Australia and China were far from what is expected from a team like Milton Keynes. At the same time, it should be noted that the RB21 is a car far from the level Max Verstappen is bringing it to.
Even during the Bahrain tests, several issues were revealed with the first car built after Adrian Newey’s departure, with Pierre Waché not hiding and confirming that Red Bull was far from McLaren and Ferrari.
But why did Helmut Marko immediately drop Liam Lawson?
Christian Horner took it upon himself to answer the question that has been on everyone’s mind for days. “Watching Liam struggle with the RB21 hasn’t been easy. That’s why we decided to make this swap so early,” reads the Red Bull statement. “Our goal for 2025 is to win the drivers’ title again and reclaim the constructors’ championship. We know there’s a lot of work to do on the car, and Yuki’s experience will be key in this regard.”
“We can’t wait for him to get on track. At the same time, we want to protect and help Liam grow, which is why we think it will be useful for him to race with the Visa Cash App Racing Bulls team. An environment and team he knows very well,” added Christian Horner.
