He did it again. Helmut Marko has once again reshuffled Red Bull’s lineup, with Yuki Tsunoda promoted three months late and Liam Lawson ready to regain his peace at Racing Bulls.
“Maybe we’ll have to put Max on the VCARB,” were the words used sarcastically by the team’s super consultant when commenting on the difficulties displayed by the RB21. Yes, because while the Red Bull car seems anything but easy to manage, the VCARB 02 has proven to be very consistent in the first two races of the season. For this reason, when talk began about a possible Liam Lawson-Yuki Tsunoda swap, many wondered how happy Yuki could be about the possibility of being promoted.
The Japanese driver will have to prove that he can stay close to Max Verstappen, who in both Melbourne and Shanghai delivered extraordinary performances, with results that went well beyond the car’s actual potential. It will certainly not be an easy task for Yuki Tsunoda, who has, however, shown over the years that he has the personality to stand out even in a difficult situation like the one he will find at Red Bull.
Helmut Marko does not hide his disappointment with Liam Lawson’s performance
“Liam had an issue in Australia during free practice, which cost him a lot of time. He needs to make up for those laps, even though what he has done so far is not enough. We need a second driver who is strong,” said the super consultant to OE24 shortly before the official announcement of the swap with Yuki Tsunoda.
“In the winter, we chose Liam because Yuki wasn’t consistent. But Lawson wasn’t able to handle the pressure of racing with Red Bull. Even from Australia, he looked like a boxer stuck in a corner, not knowing how to get out of the situation,” Helmut Marko continued.
“Certainly, the RB21 is not an easy car to drive, and perhaps Racing Bulls is stronger in qualifying. But in the race, there’s no comparison between the two,” concluded the super consultant.
