Kimi Antonelli vs Max Verstappen: why Mercedes star faces a defining F1 test

Kimi Antonelli, 2025 F1

Kimi Antonelli is closing in on the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship, but a potential battle with Max Verstappen could prove an even greater test of the young Mercedes driver’s abilities. Seventy-three years after Alberto Ascari secured the title for Ferrari, Italy’s long wait for another Formula 1 world champion appears to be approaching its end. Yet with Red Bull making significant progress, the closing stages of the season could offer Kimi Antonelli an opportunity to measure himself against the driver widely regarded as the benchmark in modern Formula 1.

Kimi Antonelli has attracted attention throughout the motorsport world since he was barely older than ten. Like Lewis Hamilton, he is now on course to win a World Championship in only his second Formula 1 season. His speed has never been seriously questioned, but the consistency with which he has outperformed George Russell, one of the strongest drivers of the previous generation of cars, has exceeded expectations. After overcoming a difficult period during his rookie campaign, the Italian has developed into a remarkably complete competitor.

How Kimi Antonelli overcame his 2025 Mercedes struggles

The foundations of Kimi Antonelli’s remarkable 2026 season can be traced back to the summer of 2025 and the subsequent introduction of Formula 1’s new technical regulations. During his debut campaign, the Italian encountered difficulties that were closely connected to the behaviour of his Mercedes rather than a fundamental lack of speed.

Particular attention was given to the revised rear suspension introduced on the 2025 car. The modification produced greater instability on corner entry, negatively affecting Kimi Antonelli’s driving approach and making it more difficult for him to extract consistent performance.

From the Hungarian Grand Prix onwards, Mercedes decided to return to the previous suspension specification, and the young driver immediately benefited. His performances during the closing months of the season improved considerably, allowing him to compete on more equal terms with George Russell. That recovery was an important indication that the underlying speed had always been present.

It also helps explain why Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff invested heavily in Testing of Previous Cars (TPC) programmes for Kimi Antonelli before his Formula 1 debut. Those sessions provided valuable preparation for a driver who was being developed with a long-term future at the team in mind.

With Kimi Antonelli now approaching the championship, Mercedes’ decision to invest in the Italian looks increasingly justified. A title would represent the eighth Drivers’ World Championship secured during Toto Wolff’s 14 years in charge, providing another significant achievement for the Austrian manager.

Mercedes’ decision to replace Lewis Hamilton with Kimi Antonelli pays off

Mercedes’ decision to favour Kimi Antonelli over Lewis Hamilton was the subject of considerable debate. However, the seven-time world champion’s early departure to pursue his dream of driving for Ferrari created an opportunity for the Italian to make his Formula 1 debut with Mercedes a year earlier than Toto Wolff had originally planned.

That additional season of experience at Brackley may have proved crucial. Without the difficulties, technical lessons and eventual recovery of his rookie campaign, it is reasonable to question whether Kimi Antonelli would have been equally prepared to deliver such an impressive second season.

The confidence shown by his race engineer Peter Bonnington was already evident after the Italian’s first victory in Shanghai. Comparing Kimi Antonelli with two of Formula 1’s greatest champions, the experienced engineer offered a particularly striking assessment.

“When I got to know drivers like Michael and Lewis, I realised that some have that extra step of one or two tenths, and Kimi has it. You can see it in the data,” Peter Bonnington explained.

Only a few months later, Kimi Antonelli is approaching a World Championship in his second Formula 1 season, a feat previously achieved by Jacques Villeneuve and Lewis Hamilton. What makes the Italian’s campaign even more remarkable is that he has established a clear advantage over an experienced and highly competitive team-mate.

Kimi Antonelli vs George Russell: the numbers behind Mercedes’ 2026 battle

The comparison between Kimi Antonelli and George Russell provides some of the strongest evidence of the young Italian’s development. Across the season, the Mercedes drivers have been separated by a relatively small margin on outright pace, but the results have consistently favoured Kimi Antonelli.

In qualifying, Kimi Antonelli leads George Russell 9-6, with an average advantage of approximately 0.15 seconds. The difference has been even more pronounced during races, where the Italian holds a 9-3 advantage in Grands Prix completed by both drivers and has demonstrated a race-pace advantage of more than two tenths of a second.

These figures are particularly impressive given George Russell’s reputation as one of Formula 1’s fastest and most established drivers. Kimi Antonelli has not simply benefited from having a competitive Mercedes W17; he has also demonstrated the ability to outperform a highly regarded team-mate with considerably more Formula 1 experience.

Perhaps the most surprising aspect of his campaign has been his consistency. Despite his relative inexperience, Kimi Antonelli has avoided many of the fluctuations normally associated with young drivers competing at the highest level.

His first significant mistake of the season came towards the end of September at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, where he left fewer than ten potential points on the table. However, his response was immediate, producing two strong weekends at Sepang and Singapore.

Mercedes representative Bradley Lord highlighted this progress when discussing the Italian’s development.

“He’s improving and learning every single weekend. Singapore was one of his most impressive weekends because of the command he showed in working through a more challenging situation with the car. There will be small mistakes or imperfections, but we’re still talking about an extremely high level,” Bradley Lord explained in an interview released by Mercedes.

The Singapore performance was particularly encouraging because it demonstrated something beyond pure speed. Kimi Antonelli showed an increasingly mature understanding of how to work around difficult car characteristics, an ability that becomes especially important during a championship campaign.

When could Kimi Antonelli win the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship?

With championship-level speed and consistency, Kimi Antonelli appears increasingly likely to secure his first Formula 1 title in the coming weeks. Mathematically clinching the championship at the United States Grand Prix in Austin looks unlikely, while the following rounds in Mexico City and Interlagos appear more realistic opportunities for his coronation.

Such an achievement would carry enormous significance for Italian motorsport. Alberto Ascari remains the country’s most recent Formula 1 Drivers’ World Champion, having secured his second title with Ferrari in 1953. Kimi Antonelli now has the opportunity to end that long wait while establishing himself among the sport’s leading figures.

For Toto Wolff and Mercedes, it would also confirm the success of a major long-term investment. The decision to accelerate Kimi Antonelli’s progression, provide extensive testing opportunities and place him directly in a front-running team would have delivered the ultimate reward.

Nevertheless, the championship standings may not provide the final answer to the question of just how good the young Italian can become.

Why Max Verstappen could be Kimi Antonelli’s toughest F1 test

The most demanding challenge facing Kimi Antonelli may be a direct battle with Max Verstappen. Despite Mercedes’ impressive 2026 campaign, the four-time World Champion remains the benchmark against which other Formula 1 drivers are frequently judged.

Matching the standard established by Max Verstappen is considered one of the clearest measures of a driver’s ability in the paddock. For Kimi Antonelli, demonstrating that he can compete directly with the Dutchman would represent another significant step towards establishing himself among Formula 1’s elite.

Until now, the performance differences between their respective cars have prevented the two drivers from regularly fighting each other on track. However, recent developments suggest that this situation could change before the end of the season.

Red Bull has recovered more than eight tenths of a second relative to Mercedes since the beginning of the year, transforming its competitive position and bringing Max Verstappen back into contention for Grand Prix victories.

That recovery creates the possibility of a fascinating confrontation between two drivers at very different stages of their careers. Max Verstappen brings the experience, racecraft and confidence of a four-time World Champion, while Kimi Antonelli represents a new generation preparing to challenge the established order.

The potential duel could become one of the defining themes of the final races of 2026. While Kimi Antonelli’s performances against George Russell have already demonstrated his exceptional ability, a direct contest with Max Verstappen would offer a different and potentially more demanding examination.

If Red Bull maintains its recent progress, the closing rounds may provide the first genuine opportunity to compare the two drivers in competitive machinery. For Kimi Antonelli, winning the championship would be a remarkable achievement in itself, but proving that he can match Max Verstappen could be just as important for his long-term reputation.

The Italian is approaching his first Formula 1 crown, yet the question remains whether he can also withstand the challenge of the driver who has set the standard for the sport over recent seasons.
