“It matters to him as much as it does to me”: Sainz shares touching moment after Baku podium
After securing a third-place finish in Baku, Carlos Sainz took a moment to pay tribute to his race engineer Gaetan Jego, who was visibly moved by the Spaniard’s result. The relationship between the two began only a few months ago, when Sainz joined Williams, but it has quickly grown into an important and meaningful partnership. Following a period filled with frustration and inconsistent performances, the number 55 driver has managed to get back on track, reminding the paddock of his talent. Jego’s emotions were clear as the two spoke over team radio during the cool-down lap.
At one point, Sainz asked: “You sound a bit emotional, everything okay?” Instead of his engineer, it was Williams team principal James Vowles who responded over the radio, confirming: “Yes, I can confirm that he is.”
Sainz later explained that he had rarely worked with someone as dedicated as his current race engineer. “It has been a tough year for both of us,” he told Formula 1’s official channel. “It might not be obvious from the outside, but you cannot imagine the amount of hours we have put into the car, into simulator sessions, setup development, and making the car faster.”
Before working with Sainz, Jego had collaborated with Franco Colapinto, Logan Sargeant, and Nicholas Latifi. “He is an incredibly hard-working guy, probably the hardest worker I have ever met in Formula 1, and I have worked with many people,” Sainz added. “I can tell you, nobody puts more hours into this sport than he does.”
Reflecting on the moment, Sainz concluded: “It was great to see him so emotional. I like it because it shows that this is just as important to him as it is to me. I enjoy working with people who put in the effort, for whom what we do really matters. And I could see in that moment just how much it meant.”
