The recent internal battle at McLaren in the F1 championship between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri has generated significant media impact, and Toto Wolff has decided to weigh in.
After the last F1 Grand Prix, many compared McLaren’s internal fight between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri to the famous rivalry during Mercedes’ dominant era between Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton, but Toto Wolff quickly dismissed the similarity. The contact between the two papaya drivers has certainly ignited the paddock and beyond. In recent days, there have been numerous statements from former drivers and others about the tension inside the papaya team.
Certainly, the prospect of a fierce battle between the two is exciting for many, especially considering the technical dominance of the MCL39. For several fans, the dream would be a title duel similar to the 2016 one between the Mercedes duo. A fascinating scenario, which could lead to plot twists in the rest of the season.
According to Toto Wolff, however—who experienced that rivalry firsthand—it’s unlikely that something similar will happen at McLaren. The internal dynamics are very different, and so is the relationship between the two drivers, which for now appears stable. Moreover, as the Austrian team principal pointed out, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri also have very different personalities: less confrontational and more balanced.
Toto Wolff’s words
“Their personalities are completely different from those of Lewis and Nico,” Toto Wolff told PlanetF1. “That rivalry developed between two long-time friends who, once they found themselves fighting for the title, quickly became fierce rivals. With Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, I don’t believe the same dynamics are in play.”
The manager then emphasized how crucial internal management is in such cases: “We learned along the way, trying to find balance as the pressure increased. McLaren today has everything it needs to face this kind of challenge and take another step forward in managing its drivers.”
