The goal has been clear from the start, and now the first results are starting to show: Williams is putting everything into the 2026 F1 season.
Prioritizing 2026 to return to winning ways, Williams is emerging as the real outsider for the next season. Paddock whispers reveal a growing fascination with the project led by James Vowles. With the arrival of Carlos Sainz at the start of last year, the Grove-based team took another step forward. The Spaniard achieved two perhaps unexpected podiums, demonstrating the quality of the work carried out by the British team.
The new World Championship is just around the corner, and the F1 world is waiting to see which of the eleven teams on the grid have fully achieved their development goals. All eyes are usually on the top teams, but a regulatory revolution like the one coming in 2026 opens the door for ambitious challengers. Teams such as Alpine, who sacrificed the entirety of 2025 to focus all their resources on 2026, are a prime example.
Interest is also growing around Grove, as confirmed by lastwordonsports.com. Williams is one of the teams that, ahead of everyone else, paused its development work to fully focus on the next technical cycle. James Vowles had made this clear from the moment he joined the British team in 2023: there would be long transitional seasons before the fruits of their efforts could finally be seen.
Sainz: “The goal is not the short term”
The objectives of Williams were confirmed by Carlos Sainz in Saudi Arabia. “I want to score points in every race, but my ultimate goal is not about the short term,” the Spaniard told us, adding: “I race with the aim of returning to victory as soon as possible, but to do that, I first need to help the team.”
“It’s no secret that the team wants to seize the opportunity provided by 2026, and for this reason, we won’t be focusing on development this year,” the former Ferrari driver admitted, now fully immersed in Grove’s long-term project.
As the 2026 technical reset approaches, Williams stands out as a formidable dark horse, having strategically shifted its resources toward the new regulations much earlier than its competitors in a bid to return to the front of the grid.
