Williams: Vowles convinced Sainz has future as team principal
Carlos Sainz Jr moved from Ferrari to Williams in the winter of 2024. It was not a completely personal choice. The Scuderia opted to sign seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, hoping to bring the Formula 1 World Championship back to Maranello. That hope is still alive within the team’s leadership and fanbase, although the target has not yet materialised.
Meanwhile, the Spanish driver is doing everything in his power to achieve strong results at Williams. In 2025, he came close to matching his teammate Alexander Albon in the points standings (ending 73 to 64 in favour of the Thai driver), finishing strongly in the second half of the season. However, what team principal James Vowles values most — beyond his driving ability — is his capacity to work within the team and help drive it forward.
James Vowles has no doubts: “Sainz is a leader. He has the potential to be a team principal”
He values him so highly that he would even be willing to give him his own role as team principal: “Sainz is incredible. He does not dwell on mistakes. He does not attack others or look for scapegoats. He shows us he is a leader, especially in moments when things are going badly. Those are the moments when you learn the most,” as reported by Marca.com.
“I would give Sainz my job as team principal. He is absolutely fantastic,” James Vowles added. “He has everything needed to lead a team. Without any doubt, I believe he has the potential to do it. Maybe he would need a bit of support, but he would have the capability to succeed.”
These are significant words that will surely fill the Spanish driver with pride. It remains to be seen whether, once he hangs up his helmet, he will consider taking that path into team management in the future.
James Vowles’ high praise for Carlos Sainz confirms what many in the paddock have suspected for years: Carlos Sainz is one of the most “cerebral” drivers on the grid. His ability to maintain composure and lead a team through the inevitable lows of a rebuilding phase is exactly why Williams fought so hard to secure his signature for the 2026 era.
