Lando Norris impressed by Kimi Antonelli’s rise: “Mercedes has done a great job developing him”. Lando Norris praises Mercedes for its development of Kimi Antonelli.

Kimi Antonelli, Mercedes, 2024 F1

Lando Norris believes that Kimi Antonelli is fully deserving of his current position at the top of the Formula 1 world championship standings. The young Italian driver from Bologna is widely seen as the product of an excellent development pathway created by Mercedes, which has carefully nurtured his talent and accelerated his rise to the top level of the sport.

Just over a hundred days ago, Lando Norris was celebrating his first Formula 1 world championship title. Today, however, the reigning champion finds himself in sixth place in the standings with 15 points, a situation heavily influenced by a McLaren that has not fully adapted to the new regulations in the early part of the season. Despite this, the British driver remains optimistic, especially after Oscar Piastri’s podium finish in Suzuka, which suggests McLaren could soon return to fighting at the front again.

Even so, the gap to Mercedes remains significant, and at the moment there is one driver at Brackley who seems to be doing everything right. That driver is Kimi Antonelli, who currently leads the championship after securing back-to-back victories in China and Japan.

Faced with the rapid progress of the young Italian, Norris has been quick to show respect. According to the McLaren driver, Mercedes has done an outstanding job in developing the number 12, although he also believes Antonelli now faces the real test of handling the pressure that comes with leading a world championship. Norris is well aware of how demanding that situation can be for any driver.

Le parole di Norris

“From the first to the second year, a driver makes a huge step forward in every area. You feel much more comfortable in every aspect,” Norris explained. “On top of that, Mercedes has always seemed to me like a very strong team when it comes to protecting its drivers, taking care of them, and defending them when necessary. They have always done a very good job in that regard.”

“Kimi also seems like a very down-to-earth guy, someone who is very dedicated to his work, and that is definitely a positive thing. In his second year he is already fighting for the championship, and I think that shows just how good he is.”

“Now he has the opportunity to fight for pole positions, race wins, and the title. It is a big challenge ahead of him, but at the moment he looks very capable. I am really excited to see how he handles it,” Lando Norris added.
