Carlos Sainz is reportedly negotiating exclusively with Williams over a one-year contract extension, with an announcement potentially arriving before the 2026 Dutch Grand Prix. However, several details still need to be resolved, including the salary and clauses that could allow the Spanish driver to leave if a more competitive Formula 1 opportunity becomes available.
Rumours surrounding the Formula 1 driver market have not subsided, and Carlos Sainz has inevitably been one of the main figures in the speculation of recent weeks. Before the summer break, the Madrid-born driver suggested that he intended to use the time away from racing to consider his future carefully.
Before leaving Hungary, Carlos Sainz said: “The plan is to decide, but yes, the situation needs to be assessed calmly.”
Carlos Sainz later added, referring in part to Williams team principal James Vowles: “Honestly, I don’t know. I don’t have a date yet. I’ve always said that I would wait until the summer to sit down with my team, think things over and discuss with them, together with James and the others, the future of the team and my future within it.”
Carlos Sainz Williams contract renewal talks continue
The summer break is now drawing to a close, with Formula 1 returning to action at Zandvoort this weekend for the beginning of the second half of the 2026 season. According to MARCA, negotiations between Carlos Sainz and Williams have continued during the shutdown.
Carlos Sainz and his management are reportedly considering only an extension with the Grove-based team. However, a new Formula 1 contract involves several details that still need to be settled, particularly potential clauses that would give Carlos Sainz the freedom to pursue a better opportunity if one became available.
Such protection would be especially important at this stage of Carlos Sainz’s career. Reports have already suggested that his existing deal may contain a Williams exit clause for a potential 2027 move, making the precise structure of any new agreement a central part of the negotiations.
Williams performance makes a short-term deal more attractive
The situation is also influenced by Williams’s performance, which has not fully met the expectations created when Carlos Sainz joined the team at the end of 2024. The car’s competitiveness has declined compared with its initial promise, while Carlos Sainz has frequently produced performances beyond the apparent potential of the machinery.
Williams has acknowledged that its planned Baku upgrade will not solve all of its problems, reinforcing the uncertainty surrounding the team’s short-term competitiveness. Its difficult campaign is also reflected in the 2026 Formula 1 driver standings.
Carlos Sainz’s preferred approach would therefore reportedly be a one-year extension accompanied by a salary increase that reflects what he has delivered on track so far.
€30 million Carlos Sainz salary claim appears unlikely
Marc Limacher of Business Book GP recently reported that Carlos Sainz was seeking approximately €30 million per season for a possible agreement running through 2027. That figure was subsequently repeated by several publications and other sources until it began to be treated almost as confirmed information.
In reality, however, €30 million appears difficult to achieve. This is not because Carlos Sainz has failed to demonstrate that he deserves significant financial recognition, but primarily because of Williams’s financial position. The British team reportedly still has several economic matters to resolve, making it difficult to offer a salary almost three times higher than his current earnings.
Figures circulated in recent years suggest that Carlos Sainz’s present contract is worth approximately €13 million per season. Any renewal would therefore still be expected to include a substantial increase, although it is difficult to imagine the final salary reaching the €30 million figure reported in recent weeks.
Williams announcement could arrive before the Dutch GP
Williams could announce Carlos Sainz’s renewal at any point. The most logical solution would be to confirm the agreement before Thursday’s press conference at Zandvoort, preventing Carlos Sainz from having to answer questions about his future without being able to provide any concrete information.
The timing will ultimately depend on whether the negotiations can be concluded in the coming days. Formula 1 returns with the 2026 Dutch Grand Prix weekend, potentially giving Williams a clear deadline to resolve Carlos Sainz’s future. Further updates will follow.
