Nico Rosberg harshly criticized Lando Norris after the incident with Piastri during the final stages of the Canadian Grand Prix: “One mistake among many, and this one is big”
Nico Rosberg stated that Lando Norris made a “serious mistake” when he collided with teammate Oscar Piastri during the Canadian Grand Prix. The British driver ran into the back of Oscar Piastri on the straight as he attempted to overtake him in the battle for fourth place in the closing laps of the race, and was forced to retire after the contact.
Lando Norris immediately apologized to the team over the radio after the crash: “Sorry, it’s totally my fault. All my fault. Unlucky, sorry. Stupid on my part.” Fortunately, Oscar Piastri’s car was undamaged, allowing him to finish the race and earn 12 points—gained directly on his teammate.
Analyzing the incident, 2016 F1 world champion Nico Rosberg described Norris’ mistake as “very strange.” “First of all, we’re thankful to McLaren for letting the two fight freely. It was an exciting show and a beautiful battle to watch,” said the German champion on Sky Sports F1.
“Lando pulled off a brilliant first move at the hairpin, really great. But then the mistake he made was very strange. Really, very, very strange. It’s just another error among many, and this is a big one. He went full attack, didn’t lift, stayed flat-out the whole time, which was also a bit odd. Full commitment but no space—it was a bit embarrassing.”
However, Nico Rosberg believes that McLaren will be able to move past the incident quickly: “It’s not too hard to fix because Oscar Piastri, in this case, had no blame. He didn’t do anything. Lando and Andrea [Stella, McLaren team principal] just need to talk and understand each other. No need to assign blame, it was a misjudgment—they just need to analyze and understand it.”
Still, Rosberg expressed concern that Norris, who is known to be very hard on himself, could fall into a “negative spiral” because of the crash. “The problem is that at a certain point it almost becomes traumatic, because you start slipping further and further into a negative spiral,” Rosberg explained.
“You get this reputation of, ‘I keep making mistakes, I’m not good enough, I keep messing up.’ It gets into your head. I’ve been through it myself and it’s a really tough situation, especially when you make a mistake like today’s—one everyone can see—and hit your teammate. It’s hard for Lando to get out of that.”
