Another piece of the Audi puzzle
Ahead of its official entry into Formula 1 in 2026, Audi is leaving no stone unturned, as demonstrated by the bold decision made by technical and operations director Mattia Binotto: opening a UK facility by the end of the year. By doing so, the German team, which has taken over the Sauber facility in Hinwil, Switzerland, hopes to convince more engineers to join its project.
The new technical center will be located in southeastern England and, according to the press release, “will provide the team with access to the world’s largest talent pool and create a platform to attract local engineering talent for Audi F1.” This will allow engineers to remain in the so-called English “motorsport valley” instead of relocating to Switzerland.
The details
Audi is evaluating potential locations for its F1 engineering hub, including Bicester, Silverstone, and Milton Keynes. This move will leave Ferrari as the only team among the ten in Formula 1 without a base in England. Audi aims to have the center operational by summer 2025. The design department will remain in Hinwil, Switzerland, while the engine division is based in Neuburg an der Donau, Germany.
Mattia Binotto explained: “Expanding into the UK allows us to stay close to one of the most dynamic motorsport ecosystems in the world. We want to create a strong and collaborative network between Hinwil, Neuburg, and the UK to drive performance and innovation.”
