“He was already overseeing the car’s technical development, but also managing the team and the people, understanding which areas needed strengthening. In a sense, he was already doing a lot of internal management. Perhaps this was a natural step toward 2026.”
What does Fernando Alonso expect from Adrian Newey?
When asked about the leadership style he expects from Newey at Aston Martin, Fernando Alonso did not hesitate:
“With Adrian, there is only one word: performance. It’s the relentless pursuit of speed and perfection. The team is very new, many people are young and need the guidance of leaders like Adrian. We still have a strong team here at the track with a lot of experience. We lack nothing. All we need is a fast car next year.”
Alonso: “I haven’t been this excited since 2022!”
Looking to the future, Fernando Alonso spoke with an enthusiasm he hasn’t shown in some time:
“I haven’t been this excited since 2022. Before that season, I knew Aston Martin was growing, and now the regulation change brings many uncertainties, but also many opportunities. We will have very few tests, just a day and a half in Barcelona and two days in Qatar. That’s not enough with all the 2026 changes. In these last two races, we can still score important points. We’re all close, five to seven points apart, and we have three opportunities to surpass our rivals.”
With Adrian Newey fully in charge from 2026 and a clean-sheet car on the way, Fernando Alonso clearly believes Aston Martin is on the verge of something special – and the 44-year-old is ready to be right at the heart of it.
