Newey puts Alonso’s future on the line in Hungary: “Lighter chassis and gearbox, new suspension—we hope to convince him to stay”
A crucial weekend awaits in Budapest.
Adrian Newey has revealed the full extent of the issues currently affecting Aston Martin, admitting that many of the team’s problems stem from mistakes made by himself and his engineering group rather than from the shortcomings—significant though they may be—of the Honda power unit.
The Aston Martin technical mastermind also confirmed that the team will introduce a major upgrade package at the Hungarian Grand Prix before the summer break. The goal is not only to improve performance but also to restore Fernando Alonso‘s confidence, with the Spaniard reportedly being tempted by the possibility of returning to Alpine in what would be a fourth chapter of his long-running relationship with the Enstone-based team.
“We plan to introduce our upgrade package in Hungary on both cars,” Adrian Newey explained. “The chassis and gearbox architecture remain fundamentally unchanged, but we’ve reduced the weight of both, which required a new homologation and fresh crash tests on the front section of the chassis.”
“The front suspension remains unchanged, while the rear suspension has been slightly revised. We’ve developed a new nose and made substantial changes to the aerodynamic surfaces. So, although the underlying structure is similar, this is a major aerodynamic package combined with a significant weight reduction.”
“Our objective is to get as close as possible to the minimum weight limit. Fernando is eagerly awaiting this upgrade, and if the performance meets expectations, we hope he’ll stay behind the wheel for another season.”
