George Russell has dismissed suggestions of tension with Andrea Kimi Antonelli at Mercedes, admitting that his younger teammate has simply performed at a higher level during the 2026 Formula 1 season. With the Italian approaching his first world championship ahead of the Mexico City Grand Prix, the British driver insisted that their personal relationship remains positive despite the dramatic reversal in their competitive fortunes.
George Russell began the season with victory at the Australian Grand Prix, and Mercedes’ early superiority suggested that the British driver was taking the first step towards securing his maiden world title. Few would have predicted that, by the time Formula 1 arrived in Mexico, Andrea Kimi Antonelli would have established himself as the clear championship favourite despite having considerably less experience than his teammate.
George Russell denies tension with Andrea Kimi Antonelli at Mercedes
George Russell has endured his share of misfortune during the campaign, with retirements and Safety Car interventions sometimes working against him while favouring Andrea Kimi Antonelli strategically. However, the young Italian has also repeatedly demonstrated his exceptional talent, delivering victories that have reinforced his position at the top of the championship battle.
With Andrea Kimi Antonelli eight years younger than his Mercedes teammate, the results have prompted speculation that George Russell may be frustrated by the younger driver’s success. Questions have consequently emerged about whether the competitive imbalance has created tension between the two.
Speaking through Formula 1’s official channels, George Russell was quick to reject suggestions of any personal disagreement, explaining that the relationship has remained positive throughout the season.
“On a personal level, Kimi is obviously a great guy, full of energy. There has been no reason this year not to maintain a good relationship. I think a lot of these rivalries arise from incidents or manoeuvres on the track,” George Russell explained.
“The truth is that this year he has performed at a higher level than me. As a result, we haven’t often found ourselves in situations where we’ve been fighting directly against each other. That has only happened in one or two races.”
Although both Mercedes drivers are competing for individual success, George Russell stressed that they continue to work independently with their respective engineers to maximise their performances rather than allowing their rivalry to affect their personal relationship.
“When it comes to what happens on track, we each focus on ourselves and work with our own engineers to try to get the most out of everything.”
George Russell admits unprecedented inconsistency during 2026 F1 season
Beyond questions about his relationship with Andrea Kimi Antonelli, George Russell acknowledged that his biggest concern is the inconsistency that has characterised his 2026 campaign. The British driver has demonstrated that he remains capable of producing outstanding performances, but has struggled to replicate that level from one Grand Prix to the next.
The contrast has been particularly striking following weekends such as Baku, where George Russell delivered an exceptional performance. However, the difficulties have continued elsewhere, including at the United States Grand Prix, where George Russell struggled throughout the race while Andrea Kimi Antonelli secured victory.
“I think it’s really important for me to try to find some consistency,” George Russell continued. “I’ve never experienced a season like this in my career, where performance has fluctuated so much.”
“I know I have the ability, because you can’t deliver performances like the one in Baku if you’ve supposedly ‘lost your touch’. We’re struggling to maintain a consistently high level of performance. We don’t really know why that is, and as I’ve already said, it’s something I’ve never experienced before in my career.”
“I suppose that, as far as I’m concerned, this is the priority heading into the final races.”
The Mercedes driver’s comments reflect the challenge of understanding why the car’s potential has been so difficult to access consistently. The issue has also been acknowledged by team principal Toto Wolff, who has taken responsibility for investigating George Russell’s difficulties compared with Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
George Russell reveals seven-year sports psychologist partnership
Asked how he intends to overcome Andrea Kimi Antonelli in 2027, George Russell also discussed the psychological side of his preparation. The Mercedes driver revealed that he has been working with a sports psychologist for seven years, including throughout the most successful period of his Formula 1 career.
Rather than focusing directly on defeating his teammate, George Russell believes the most effective approach is to examine his own performance and identify what prevents him from consistently reaching his potential.
“I’ve been working with a sports psychologist for seven years. That period has covered the most successful years of my Formula 1 career, and now, of course, I’m facing my first real period of difficulty,” George Russell explained.
“I think that, at least in terms of my approach, the situation is different from that of boxers, who face each other directly in a ring. We’re mostly competing against ourselves. It’s a bit like being a golfer: during a qualifying lap, you’re on your own, and it’s the work and preparation you’ve personally put in that makes the difference between a good performance and everything else.”
The comparison highlights how George Russell views the demands of Formula 1, particularly during qualifying, when a driver’s execution and preparation can be decisive. For the British driver, improving his own consistency is more important than concentrating on how to defeat a specific rival.
George Russell explains his plan to challenge Andrea Kimi Antonelli in 2027
George Russell’s priority is therefore to understand the difference between his strongest weekends and those in which he has struggled to extract performance from the Mercedes. His approach involves identifying the physical and psychological sensations associated with his best driving, as well as the characteristics of the car when everything is working correctly.
“I don’t look at my main rival and ask myself, ‘How do I beat this guy?’ Instead, I look at myself in the mirror and think, ‘What do I need to do to avoid these disappointing performances?'”
“And what feelings did I experience, both in terms of myself and the car, during my best performances, so that I can reproduce them more often?”
The comments provide an insight into George Russell’s mindset as he approaches the closing stages of a difficult championship. While Andrea Kimi Antonelli is closing in on the 2026 Formula 1 title following his Austin victory, his Mercedes teammate remains focused on understanding the fluctuations that have prevented him from mounting a sustained challenge.
George Russell has made it clear that there is no personal conflict with Andrea Kimi Antonelli, despite their contrasting results. His immediate objective is to regain consistency over the remaining races, while his longer-term ambition is to return to championship contention in 2027 by addressing the weaknesses exposed during the current season.
