Fernando Alonso sets timeline for Aston Martin and F1 future decision. Fernando Alonso to decide 2027 future after Monza.

Fernando Alonso to make future decision after Monza

The 2026 Formula 1 season has proved to be a difficult one for Aston Martin, with disappointing performances leaving the team with just a single championship point, earned thanks to Fernando Alonso’s 10th-place finish at the Monaco Grand Prix. Despite the challenging campaign, the two-time World Champion remains one of the key names in the 2027 driver market, with his current contract set to expire at the end of this season.

Fernando Alonso made it clear that he has not yet reached a decision regarding his future. He explained: “I haven’t made any decision yet. I’ll probably wait until the summer break, which is in August. After the summer we have Zandvoort and Monza… I think around that period I’ll decide what to do next year.”

The Spaniard also stressed that he still feels highly competitive and as motivated as ever: “I’ll continue racing because I feel fast, I feel motivated and I love what I do. I’m not going to stop now because I don’t feel competitive or because I’m no longer enjoying racing. Whether I’ll continue in Formula 1 or not is another story.”

Speaking about his confidence behind the wheel, Fernando Alonso added:

“I don’t need Mike Krack to tell me that I’m fast. I can feel it myself every single lap I drive on track. I’ve always felt it.”

Commitment to Aston Martin remains unchanged

Fernando Alonso reiterated that his commitment to Aston Martin goes well beyond simply driving the car.

“Even if I stop racing, my commitment to the team and to the project will remain exactly the same as it has been over the past few years. We started this journey together, enjoyed some success in 2023 and have gone through many changes within the company, with the new Silverstone campus, the Honda partnership, Aramco and the new fuels.”

He also underlined his confidence in the long-term potential of the project.

“We’ve built so many things together. As I’ve said many times, this team has everything it needs to succeed and will fight for World Championships. We don’t know whether that will happen next year, in three years or in eight years.” – the former Ferrari driver pointed out.

His personal objective remains unchanged: “But I want to win a World Championship with Aston Martin, whether that’s as a driver or in another role. That commitment remains exactly the same.”

Fernando Alonso dismisses transfer rumours

Asked about speculation linking him with other teams, Fernando Alonso played down the rumours, describing them as a normal consequence of Aston Martin’s current struggles.

“There are always rumours. We’ve been judged very harshly by the outside world, and that’s normal. We’re underperforming, we’re going through a difficult period, and whenever the summer break approaches there are always plenty of rumours.”

He continued:

“There are rumours surrounding the top teams, and there are rumours about us as well because we’re underperforming. But, as I’ve said, my commitment to Aston Martin goes beyond the time I spend driving the car. I believe in this project and I believe we have the right people.”

Formula 1 remains the ultimate challenge

Fernando Alonso acknowledged that he still has an interest in competing in other categories of motorsport, but he described Formula 1 as the pinnacle of racing: “It remains the pinnacle of motorsport, and it’s still attractive if we’re able to overcome this situation.”

The Aston Martin driver also admitted that turning the team’s fortunes around is a challenge that motivates him.

“Starting from such a difficult position and being this far behind right now, if we can turn things around and make the car fast and competitive next year or in the future, that’s an incredibly exciting objective.”

He concluded with a message that perfectly reflects his well-known determination.

“I never give up, and I’m certainly not going to give up now because of a few difficulties and a tough start to the season. If anyone thinks we’re going to surrender now, then they don’t know the last 25 years of my life.”
