Aston Martin has confirmed that Jak Crawford will replace Lance Stroll during the opening free practice session of the 2026 Mexico City Grand Prix, giving the 21-year-old American another opportunity to drive the AMR26. The session at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez will mark a return to the circuit where Jak Crawford made his official Formula 1 practice debut twelve months earlier.
For Jak Crawford, currently Aston Martin’s third driver, the outing will be his fourth FP1 appearance of the 2026 season. It will also allow the British team to complete all four mandatory young-driver practice sessions required under Formula 1 regulations, while giving its promising reserve driver further valuable experience in contemporary F1 machinery.
Jak Crawford to replace Lance Stroll at the 2026 Mexico City Grand Prix
The announcement comes during the United States Grand Prix weekend in Austin, an especially meaningful occasion for Jak Crawford, who was born in Houston, Texas. The American will now prepare to return to a circuit that already holds considerable personal significance, having made his Formula 1 practice debut there in 2025.
Although Jak Crawford has since gained additional experience through simulator work, testing programmes and official practice appearances, the opportunity to return to Mexico represents another important stage in his development with Aston Martin.
“I can’t wait to get back behind the wheel of the AMR26 in Mexico. It’s a special circuit for me because it’s where I made my FP1 debut last year. Since then, I’ve learned a lot, both on track and in the simulator, and I want to put that experience into practice by providing useful feedback to the team,” Jak Crawford said.
The session will give Jak Crawford another opportunity to demonstrate his progress while contributing to Aston Martin’s preparations for the race weekend. With Lance Stroll stepping aside for FP1, the American will be responsible for gathering useful information and completing the programme assigned to him by the team’s engineers.
Mike Krack praises Jak Crawford’s progress at Aston Martin
Aston Martin Chief Trackside Officer Mike Krack highlighted the development Jak Crawford has demonstrated since his first official Formula 1 practice appearance, particularly through his contribution to the team’s simulator and testing programmes.
“He returns to Mexico with much more experience than he had when he made his debut last year. His contribution in the simulator and testing programmes has been valuable. This session represents another opportunity for him to demonstrate his abilities and contribute to the team’s preparations for the weekend,” Mike Krack explained.
That experience has become an important part of Jak Crawford’s role within Aston Martin. Alongside his work as the team’s reserve driver, the American has continued building his knowledge of Formula 1 machinery and the technical demands involved in preparing a car for a Grand Prix weekend.
Aston Martin completes its mandatory rookie practice programme
Jak Crawford’s Mexico City appearance will also bring Aston Martin’s mandatory rookie practice programme for 2026 to an end. Under the sporting regulations, each team must provide four free practice opportunities to drivers who meet the eligibility requirements, allowing young prospects to gain experience during official Grand Prix weekends.
For Aston Martin, these sessions serve a dual purpose. They fulfil the team’s regulatory obligations while providing Jak Crawford with meaningful track time and opportunities to develop his technical understanding of the AMR26.
The 21-year-old has already become familiar with the demands of working inside a Formula 1 team, but each additional appearance allows him to gain further experience in conditions that cannot be fully replicated through simulator running alone.
The Mexico City Grand Prix therefore represents another important opportunity for Jak Crawford as he continues accumulating mileage and experience behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car. With his ambitions firmly focused on securing a full-time race seat in the future, the American will be looking to demonstrate once again that he has the ability to compete at the highest level of motorsport.
