Kimi Antonelli found himself in an unusual situation during the Singapore Grand Prix weekend when security failed to recognise him and refused to let him back into the paddock. The Mercedes driver even tried to explain that he was a Formula 1 driver, but it ultimately took the arrival of Max Verstappen before the gate was opened.
The amusing episode provided a lighter moment during a weekend in which Antonelli continued moving closer to what could become his first Formula 1 World Championship at just 20 years old.
Kimi Antonelli’s unusual Singapore paddock problem
The countdown towards Kimi Antonelli potentially being crowned Formula 1 world champion has already begun, with the Italian now very close to securing his first title.
Yet away from the car, Antonelli still regularly shows the relaxed and sometimes awkward side of a 20-year-old adapting to life at the very top of motorsport.
One of the most entertaining behind-the-scenes moments from Singapore came when Antonelli found himself locked outside the paddock because the gate would not open for him.
Security did not recognise the Mercedes driver, leaving the championship leader unable to access an area reserved for drivers.
Antonelli tells security: “I’m an F1 driver”
Antonelli was attempting to return to the paddock alongside a member of the Mercedes team, but security kept the gate closed.
The Italian then tried to explain who he was in an attempt to convince the security staff to allow him through.
“Excuse me, I’m a Formula 1 driver,” Kimi Antonelli said.
Even that was not enough.
The championship leader was forced to wait until Max Verstappen appeared a few minutes later. The Red Bull driver was evidently recognised immediately, because security opened the gate as soon as he arrived.
That also allowed Antonelli to enter after his own attempts to prove his identity had failed.
Light-hearted moment during Antonelli’s title push
The incident came during a highly successful Singapore weekend for Antonelli, who secured second place and added another significant points haul in his championship campaign.
The Italian is now approaching the moment when he could become Formula 1 world champion at just 20 years old, with the title potentially being decided as early as Austin.
For now, however, Antonelli appears intent on approaching each race calmly rather than becoming overwhelmed by the pressure of a potentially historic achievement.
His championship position can be followed through the Formula 1 driver standings, with the season moving towards its decisive final rounds.
The Singapore security mix-up offered a striking contrast to the pressure surrounding his title campaign: on track, Antonelli is fighting for the biggest prize in Formula 1; away from it, he briefly had to convince security that he belonged in the paddock at all.
