Woking in crisis: McLaren’s 2026 F1 disaster and the impact on the constructors’ title race. McLaren struggles through a shocking start to the 2026 F1 season,.

Oscar Piastri, McLaren MCL40, 2026 F1

The first two races of the 2026 Formula 1 season have already delivered surprises, but perhaps none as unexpected and disappointing as the deep crisis hitting McLaren. Renowned engineer Luigi Mazzola, speaking to NEWSF1.it, analyzed the team’s disastrous start, describing a “truly embarrassing situation” that raises serious questions about Woking’s hopes for the constructors’ championship.

After a strong 2025 season where both McLaren cars fought until the final race for the constructors’ title, 2026 has started as a nightmare. Mazzola commented, “After two Grand Prix where Oscar Piastri essentially didn’t deliver, watching both drivers finish without impact, it’s really an embarrassing situation for McLaren.”

Disastrous season opener: zero points and shaky reliability

The Australian Grand Prix already revealed cracks, with Lando Norris forced into a recovery drive, but in China the situation worsened dramatically. The highlight was a double retirement—an extremely rare occurrence for a top team, especially one with McLaren’s history and prestige.

Mazzola emphasized the stark contrast with last year: “Last year, McLaren practically doubled the points of others, and this year they arrive unprepared and exposed.”

Lack of preparation and reliability problems

The engineer’s analysis points to pre-season and car development issues. While teams like Mercedes and Ferrari arrived at winter testing with ready, reliable cars and smooth development programs, McLaren appears to have faced significant setbacks. “It’s not that they’re unprepared, but it seems they need time to reach a package that can at least run without major problems,” Mazzola explained.

This initial lack of preparation translates into poor reliability and performance, relegating the team to the back of the grid. The gap with the top teams is striking: “After two Grand Prix, there is a clear distinction between teams that are ready and working perfectly, and others that, due to reliability or lack of performance, are simply in another category—they are not present.”

Implications for the spectacle and the constructors’ championship

McLaren’s crisis impacts not just team morale and standings, but also the overall spectacle of Formula 1. Mazzola noted, “This affects the excitement of the Grand Prix. Sure, there are overtakes in the midfield, but when someone is 50 seconds behind the leaders, it’s not exactly thrilling for the fans.”

With two heavy zeros in the standings and what appear to be structural issues, McLaren faces an extremely difficult road in the constructors’ championship. Closing the gap to Ferrari and Mercedes will require immense effort to field a competitive, reliable car. It’s a season-start to forget for Woking, which now must race against time to recover and climb back up the rankings.

McLaren’s fall from grace in these early stages of 2026 shows how quickly the hierarchy can shift under new regulations. For the fans and the team alike, the focus now turns to whether the technical department can find a “silver bullet” solution before the European leg of the season begins, or if the 2026 title has already slipped through their fingers.
