Andrea Kimi Antonelli claimed his first-ever Formula 1 Sprint victory at Silverstone during the British Grand Prix weekend, but despite the milestone success, the young Mercedes driver insisted that neither he nor the team can afford to relax.

The Italian produced a mature and composed drive across all 17 laps, overtaking Lewis Hamilton before controlling the race to secure a memorable victory ahead of the Ferrari driver. The result also strengthened his lead at the top of the Drivers’ Championship, while Lando Norris completed the podium for McLaren.

Speaking to Formula 1’s official media after the Sprint, Andrea Kimi Antonelli described the decisive fight with Lewis Hamilton that ultimately secured him the victory.

“It was a fun battle with Lewis. We were both pushing as hard as we could. Once I entered overtake mode, I knew the opportunity would come. On that lap I was really close, I used the extra power and managed to get past him. Once I was in front, I focused on finding my own rhythm while trying to stay out of Lewis Hamilton’s overtake window.”

Mercedes cannot afford to relax

Although delighted with his first Sprint triumph, Andrea Kimi Antonelli stressed that Mercedes must continue improving if it wants to remain ahead in the championship battle.

“The team is doing a really good job. Obviously, we can’t lower our guard. Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari are doing an incredible job, and then there’s Red Bull and McLaren as well. We have to keep raising the bar and continue delivering performance.”

His comments underline the mature mindset that has characterised his impressive rookie campaign. Rather than celebrating the victory for too long, Andrea Kimi Antonelli acknowledged the rapid progress being made by Ferrari and the other leading teams, emphasising that Mercedes must continue developing throughout the season if it wants to remain on top.

Kimi Antonelli therefore continues to impress in his 2026 campaign, balancing his maiden Sprint victory with the recognition that the championship fight remains incredibly tight.
