George Russell has expressed his disappointment with Mercedes, the team he joined with the expectation of fighting for the Formula 1 World Championship each season, yet so far he has never had the car capable of achieving that goal. Here is what he shared regarding his experience and ambitions.
Since the introduction of the 2022 regulation changes, Mercedes has been one of the teams facing the greatest challenges in remaining competitive. Indeed, ever since those major technical shifts, the German team has struggled to provide its drivers with a car capable of seriously contending for the championship. In a candid interview with Motorsport.com, George Russell admitted his frustration, noting that upon joining Mercedes, he had anticipated competing for world titles.
George Russell on his ambition to win a Drivers’ Championship
Since his arrival at Mercedes in 2022, George Russell has faced a challenging journey. Pushing the car to its absolute limits, he has frequently outperformed his former teammate Lewis Hamilton and has also played a key role in supporting the development of rising talent Kimi Antonelli during this season.
Despite the setbacks, the experience appears to have fueled his determination. “I am definitely hungrier than ever, I just want to push myself to the maximum,” the British driver acknowledged in his interview. “I had hoped that after seven seasons in Formula 1, I would at least have had one year where I could fight for the championship. When I joined Mercedes, we believed we would compete for the title every single year. Unfortunately, it hasn’t turned out that way.”
Comparisons with Charles Leclerc, Lando Norris, and Michael Schumacher
George Russell believes he still has time to make his mark in Formula 1 and has reflected on the career trajectories of other top drivers. He compared his journey to that of Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris, pointing out that both had to wait several years before having a genuine opportunity to challenge for a championship.
“It was the same with Charles,” he explained. “And probably, nobody would have predicted two years ago the progress McLaren would make. Lando spent five years with them without ever having a real chance to fight at the front. So, you just have to accept that this is the nature of Formula 1. It has always been like this.”
Finally, Russell mentioned Michael Schumacher, who won his first World Championship with Ferrari at a relatively mature stage in his career. This example reinforces that a title with Mercedes is still within reach for Russell. “If you look at Michael Schumacher,” he elaborated, “he was in his fifth year with Ferrari and already over 30 years old before he won a title with them. I’m 27 now, so I still have some time on my side.”
