F1 | Alex Dunne returns to the F1 cockpit with McLaren
Alex Dunne will take the wheel of the McLaren once again, participating in the first practice session of the 2025 Italian Grand Prix at Monza. The young Irish driver, currently competing in Formula 2, returns to Formula 1 for his second race weekend, following his debut in June at the Red Bull Ring in Austria.
Dunne’s Impressive Debut
During his first outing in the MCL39, the 19-year-old impressed by finishing just 0.069 seconds behind title contender Oscar Piastri. Dunne described the experience as “the best day of my life,” making him the first Irish driver to participate in a Formula 1 weekend in 22 years.
New Opportunity at Monza
The Monza session comes at a pivotal moment in the season. As McLaren’s development driver, Dunne balances his F1 duties with his Formula 2 campaign at Rodin Motorsport, where he currently sits fifth in the standings with two victories at Bahrain and Imola. He trails championship leader Leonardo Fornaroli by 30 points, with four rounds still remaining in the F2 season.
Dunne expressed his excitement about the opportunity at Monza, saying it will be special to drive on such a historic track. He hopes to improve on his Austria performance and support Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri throughout the weekend.
The McLaren Rookie Program
Alex Dunne’s participation is part of the four mandatory rookie sessions outlined in the F1 regulations. After Austria and Italy, Pato O’Ward is scheduled for the Mexico session, while the fourth rookie outing is likely to take place in Abu Dhabi, although it has yet to be confirmed.
Rising Talent Despite Setbacks
Despite facing challenges in Formula 2, including a disqualification in Austria for excessive floor wear and a penalty in Belgium after an irregular start, Dunne has consistently demonstrated speed, resilience, and strong racecraft. His performances highlight him as one of the most promising young drivers in the international motorsport scene.
