Andrea Stella: “Norris, we identified a chassis issue”
Disappointment for Lando
Lando Norris arrived in the Netherlands determined to reduce the nine-point gap to teammate Oscar Piastri, on a circuit he particularly enjoys. A strong lap from the Australian in Q3 pushed Norris to start from second on the grid, but an uncertain start saw him drop to third, further complicating his weekend.
Undeterred, Norris fought back, reclaiming second place with an impressive overtake on Max Verstappen and began chasing Piastri, though he was never able to launch a decisive attack. However, on lap 65 of 72, his McLaren finally gave up, first showing smoke in the cockpit and later unmistakable oil smoke from the rear of the car. This setback makes Norris’ championship challenge more difficult, now 34 points behind Piastri.
AndreaStella’s explanation
“Today we saw both sides of motorsport,” team principal Andrea Stella told Sky Sport UK, adding: “On one side, there is the joy and satisfaction of another McLaren victory, a well-deserved success for Oscar, who had a strong and consistent weekend. On the other side, there is the disappointment of Lando’s retirement. We identified a problem on the chassis side and will carry out a full analysis before Monza. This is the first technical issue for the team after a long series of races with flawless reliability.” – the McLaren team boss concluded at the end of the Dutch Grand Prix
