Lewis Hamilton’s debut at the wheel of a Ferrari did not go unnoticed, but unfortunately for the seven-time world champion, the spotlight was on him for all the wrong reasons. During the Australian Grand Prix, the Briton finished only in tenth place, a result that even German newspapers did not hesitate to call one of the worst debuts in Maranello’s recent history.
German media criticism: Lewis Hamilton under fire
Among the harshest critics, the well-known Spiegel Sport did not mince words with its headline: “A teenager steals the spotlight from Lewis Hamilton.” Their article states: “At the start of the Formula 1 season, all eyes were on Lewis Hamilton’s debut with Ferrari, but he struggled in the rain. Instead, the one making waves was a man who had just gotten his driver’s license.”
The reference is clearly to young talent Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who, with a solid and mistake-free performance, overshadowed Lewis Hamilton’s highly anticipated debut. The German press highlighted how the Italian driver, despite his young age and limited F1 experience, managed to stand out confidently.
Lewis Hamilton facing difficulties and pressure: a tough start
Lewis Hamilton’s tenth-place finish has raised numerous questions about his adaptability to Ferrari and the team’s decision to bet on him. According to several newspapers, the Briton struggled more than expected to adapt to the adverse weather conditions and the new technical package, while Antonelli demonstrated confidence and speed.
The sharp commentary from Spiegel Sport reflects the general sentiment of the German media, which now views Hamilton’s season with Ferrari with skepticism. It will be up to the seven-time world champion, formerly of Mercedes, to respond to the criticism starting from the next race.
