The 2025 F1 World Championship is just around the corner, but some have already lost hope. The competition is expected to be fierce and the grid very tight, but this won’t be enough to convince some teams to continue developing their cars. It’s far too important to show up for the 2026 tests with a competitive car, and any hesitation in resource management could prove fatal.
When thinking about the new season, which will begin in Australia in a week, the focus shifts to the future champions. McLaren, Ferrari, Red Bull, and Mercedes are all vying for the title and promise to fight. Some suggest the MCL39 is the clear favorite, but this would mean underestimating the excellent work done in Maranello over the winter.
The first results will provide a clearer perspective. However, when looking at the season as a whole, it’s hard not to recall Toto Wolff’s warning: with the 2026 revolution approaching, how difficult will it be to develop the current cars, a crucial task for staying in the fight? This dilemma concerns everyone, from the top teams to those seeking redemption.
The Warning from an Anonymous Team Principal
This issue was raised by David Croft, Sky Sports F1 commentator: “If you’re Alpine, you don’t intend to invest many resources in 2025 after Spain. What’s the point? As a team principal from a mid-field team told me over the winter: ‘We could focus everything on 2025 and gain a position, but what’s the point? If we do that, we’ll sacrifice ourselves for 2026.’”
“2026 represents a massive change, and all the teams are aware of it. James Vowles said: ‘We’ll fight hard for every point, that’s my promise.’ I don’t think he’s lying. They’ll fight as much as possible, but they won’t bring updates to every race. Because what would be the point? While they’re focused on this, they’re not focused on next year.”
