Monza 2020: The End of an Era
Just over a week before the start of the 2025 World Championship, there is a more optimistic atmosphere at Williams after the difficult seasons the historic Grove team has endured. The goals set by the British team are still far from being achieved, but they are closer than they were at the 2020 Italian Grand Prix, when the team’s founder, Sir Frank Williams, decided to sell the team to Dorilton Capital, a year before his death at the age of 79.
James Vowles’ Arrival
After Jost Capito’s resignation as Team Principal in 2022, former Mercedes head strategist James Vowles took over the role the following year, with the task of lifting Williams out of its performance crisis by transforming the team’s work culture. A mission that James Vowles is successfully carrying out, as evidenced by the agreement with Atlassian and the arrival of Carlos Sainz, all while continuing Frank Williams’ philosophy.
Pride in Representing Williams
The honor of inheriting the leadership of this team is something James Vowles takes very personally: “Would Williams have been proud of the direction we’re taking? That’s a great question, and the short answer is yes, but in a slightly different way,” he explained to the media. “This wasn’t the first day I wore the Atlassian and Williams shirts on my chest, it was a few weeks ago for the shoot, and I took five minutes to be incredibly proud to have the opportunity to carry his name and Atlassian’s. We have an absolute responsibility, and I joined this team because it has been the benchmark in this sport that redefined certain elements for me and brought me into this sport, which is why I’m leading Williams today. It’s very meaningful and personal to me, and my goal is simply to bring this team back to a championship level, and I want to make sure I do justice to him, his name, and his legacy.”
