A former driver warns McLaren: the team could pay a high price for the Norris-Piastri rivalry, now on the verge of exploding. McLaren started the season strongly, but something seems to have cracked between Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
The two talents are driving the British team into an internal battle for the world championship, but the balance could break at any moment.
Underlying tension: the silent duel between teammates
The alarm was raised by Jolyon Palmer, former Formula 1 driver and now a technical commentator, who spotted the first real sign of tension between the two drivers during qualifying for the Spanish GP.
Lando Norris, attempting to use his teammate’s slipstream at the start of Q3, annoyed Oscar Piastri, who called the move “cheeky” over the radio. The response? A strategic block to prevent any advantage.
According to Jolyon Palmer, that moment marked the beginning of the end of internal peace: “It was the first time they actively tried to get in each other’s way. And if you think about why, it makes perfect sense: they are fighting for the same goal.”
With seven wins in nine races, McLaren is in a competitive position like it hasn’t been for years, but internal harmony could become its true weak point. Oscar Piastri currently leads the championship by 10 points over Lando Norris, and the closer the end of the season gets, the harder it will be for both to act as team players.
Jolyon Palmer concludes with a clear prediction: “They can’t keep being nice and letting each other by. They’re already starting to hide information and keep the knives out for Sundays on track.”
For McLaren, then, the challenge won’t just be to win the title, but to prevent the title race from turning into a civil war on track.
