The upcoming year will be pivotal for the world of Formula 1. One of the sport’s most significant regulation changes brings with it countless questions and predictions about who will come out on top. The cars on the grid will not be the same as in 2025, not only in terms of technical and aesthetic features, but also because two new teams will be joining the championship.
Taking advantage of such a drastic change is a perfectly strategic move. Having more time to develop their cars allows these two new automotive giants, Audi and Cadillac, to enter the championship immediately as contenders for strong positions. Their strategies differ significantly, but they share the common goal of becoming top teams in the future. They will not be content to simply become midfield teams like Haas or Racing Bulls; their medium-term objective is victory.
Audi: years of preparation for this moment
The first team in question, Audi—formerly Sauber—enters Formula 1 with high expectations and many years of preparation dedicated exclusively to this regulation change. Following the announcement of their entry back in 2022, replacing the Kick Sauber F1 team, the German outfit was able to focus solely on developing their 2026 car, gaining a significant development advantage over competitors.
The aesthetic concept of the R26, Audi’s new car, has left almost everyone stunned. From the outset, it is clear that the team’s goal is to achieve victories in the near term. The Power Unit is designed in-house by Audi, and the driver lineup of Nico Hülkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto is a perfect mix of experience and eagerness to learn. With the upcoming season full of unknowns, having such a balance of experience within the team could prove to be their secret weapon.
Audi’s strategy looks very promising, and in 2026 they are expected to be among the main protagonists of the season, despite the uncertainties brought by the new regulations. In fact, these uncertainties might even work in their favor.
Cadillac: American pride
General Motors had long sought entry into Formula 1, but the perfect opportunity never came—until now. With the announcement of the 2026 regulation changes, the long-awaited moment has arrived. Under the Cadillac name, the American team will be the 11th team on the grid next season, bringing the total number of cars to 22. The announcement came later than Audi’s, as did the research and development of the new car. The project is ambitious but well planned.
The Cadillac car’s Power Unit will initially be sourced from Ferrari, transitioning to in-house production only by 2028. This approach allows the team to gain the necessary experience during their first year on the grid, preparing for the future with their own engine and battery pack. This experience will be reinforced by their 2026 driver lineup: Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez. Both Formula 1 veterans returning to the cockpit will provide invaluable track experience for the development of the team. The plan is not to dominate immediately, but Cadillac is set to become a strong contender in the near future.
The upcoming season is shrouded in mystery, making it essential to keep an eye on every single detail. The arrival of two industrial giants like Audi and Cadillac serves as an extraordinary incentive for the future of Formula 1, promising a more competitive and unpredictable era than ever before.
