Kimi Antonelli warns of Max Verstappen threat despite stunning Austin pole

Kimi Antonelli, Mercedes W17, 2026 F1

Andrea Kimi Antonelli has warned that Max Verstappen and Red Bull could pose a serious threat at the 2026 United States Grand Prix, despite the Mercedes driver securing an outstanding pole position at the Circuit of The Americas. The Italian acknowledged that Red Bull’s impressive long-run pace could make Sunday’s race particularly difficult, with the battle into Turn 1 potentially proving crucial to his chances of victory.

After taking pole position at COTA with a remarkable qualifying performance, Andrea Kimi Antonelli remained firmly grounded. Speaking to Sky Sports F1 immediately after the session, the young Mercedes driver expressed considerable satisfaction with the clean driving he had maintained throughout qualifying, something especially important at a demanding circuit such as Austin.

One of the keys to his performance was his precision in respecting track limits, an issue that had caused him several difficulties during previous race weekends. Having learned from those experiences, Andrea Kimi Antonelli explained why avoiding unnecessary mistakes had been particularly important in securing pole position.

Kimi Antonelli reveals how avoiding track limits helped secure Austin pole

“One of the keys was never exceeding track limits. It was fundamental for me because I had a couple of races where I exceeded them at crucial moments, putting myself in a difficult position and under greater pressure. That wasn’t ideal.”

Those previous difficulties made Saturday’s clean qualifying performance all the more satisfying for the Mercedes driver. At a circuit where exceeding the white lines can easily invalidate a competitive lap, maintaining consistency throughout the session helped Andrea Kimi Antonelli approach the decisive Q3 runs without adding unnecessary pressure.

“Today, however, I had a clean run from start to finish. It wasn’t easy. Q3 was very complicated when it came to putting the lap together because the wind picked up and it was difficult out there. It was a shame about the final attempt [which was subsequently abandoned], because it was looking really good, but a gust of wind made me lose the car. Still, it was tough for everyone and I’m delighted with the result. A big thank you goes to the team for continuing to work on this package. Tomorrow we’ll try to finish the job.”

The changing wind conditions made the final stage of qualifying especially demanding. Although Andrea Kimi Antonelli was unable to complete his last flying lap, his earlier effort of 1:34.035 remained unbeaten, giving him his seventh pole position of the 2026 Formula 1 season.

Max Verstappen qualified second, 0.179 seconds behind the Mercedes driver, while Red Bull teammate Isack Hadjar secured third place. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton completed the top five, leaving both Italian cars within striking distance of the leaders for Sunday’s race. The 2026 United States Grand Prix weekend at COTA therefore enters its decisive race with Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari all occupying the leading grid positions.

Max Verstappen’s Red Bull race pace concerns Kimi Antonelli

Despite starting from pole position, Andrea Kimi Antonelli is under no illusion that Sunday’s Grand Prix will be straightforward. Asked about the possibility of an attack from Max Verstappen, the Italian admitted that Red Bull’s impressive long-run performance during Friday’s practice sessions represents one of the biggest threats to his victory hopes.

“It will be tough because yesterday Max and Red Bull had really strong long-run pace. We weren’t bad, but the car was difficult to drive. Complicated, really complicated. We’ll just try to do our best, make a good start, hope we’re leading into the first corner and then dictate the pace from there.”

The Mercedes driver’s assessment highlights the distinction between outright qualifying performance and the demands of a full Grand Prix distance. Although Andrea Kimi Antonelli demonstrated the speed required to beat Max Verstappen over a single lap, the Dutchman’s performance during longer runs has given Mercedes reason to remain cautious.

That challenge becomes particularly important at the Circuit of The Americas, where maintaining consistent performance across a race stint requires careful tyre management. The tyre and strategy considerations identified by Pirelli for the Austin race underline the importance of finding the right balance between pace, grip and consistency.

Turn 1 could prove crucial in Mercedes’ battle with Red Bull and Ferrari

Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s immediate priority for Sunday’s race is clear: defend his lead from the start, negotiate the steep uphill approach to Turn 1 and establish control of the Grand Prix before his rivals have an opportunity to attack.

The distinctive first corner at COTA presents an immediate challenge for the polesitter, particularly with Max Verstappen starting alongside him on the front row. A strong launch could allow Andrea Kimi Antonelli to dictate the early pace, while any loss of position would leave him facing the difficult task of recovering against a Red Bull that has already demonstrated encouraging performance over longer distances.

Ferrari must also be considered in the longer-distance battle, with Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton starting fourth and fifth respectively. Both drivers will have an opportunity to challenge the cars ahead, although their ability to remain competitive will depend on how effectively the SF-26 performs across the race.

For Andrea Kimi Antonelli and Mercedes, the objective is to convert an exceptional Saturday performance into a victory on Sunday. However, with Max Verstappen’s long-run pace presenting a genuine concern and Ferrari positioned just behind the leading Red Bulls, the Italian knows that his pole position is only the first step towards completing the job in Austin.
