Formula 1 is about to undergo a radical change, at least in terms of power units. The new engines that will debut in 2026 will be completely revamped from an electrical standpoint, as they will be without the MGU-H, but also from a thermal perspective, with 100% renewable fuel to be introduced into the combustion chamber.
Williams, through the words of its team principal, James Vowles, was the first to comment on the work done by its engine suppliers.
Mercedes invested earlier than others in the 2026 power units
The manager, who came from Mercedes (former head of strategies), couldn’t help but praise the work done by the manufacturer that powers and will power the cars built by Williams this season and in the coming ones: “Mercedes has done an exceptional job. I was happy to renew the contract with them also for 2026,” when the new regulations will come into force.
“Currently, there is no longer any difference between one power unit and another. They are all very similar,” James Vowles said in a recent interview for ‘Beyond the Grid.’ “In 2026, it will be different, and there will be a clear distinction between power units. However, I don’t think we’ll reach the levels of 2024.” – the Williams team principal pointed out
“The power unit will be redesigned from an electrical standpoint, and the way maximum performance will be extracted from the thermal part will be different. This creates opportunities. Speaking of Mercedes, they were smart to invest earlier than others in different areas,” James Vowles concluded, as reported by the British media.
