Brown, the McLaren celebration now turns into a small ‘case’: unhappy joke about his wife, English media and social networks criticize him
The American manager has been criticized for a comment he made about his wife Tracy during the team’s end-of-season party to celebrate the world championship victory.
Zak goes too far
In recent days we have reported on several behind-the-scenes details from McLaren’s end-of-year celebration and on how the British team’s CEO, Zak Brown, put on a real personal show, joking in a fairly ‘strong’ manner about his two drivers, Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, leaving them standing on stage next to him somewhere between amusement and embarrassment.
Now, however, another video from the evening has gone viral on social media, once again featuring Brown, and this time it has generated far more irritated reactions and, in some cases, outright outrage.
Brown, albeit in a clearly light-hearted tone and with joking intent, made an unhappy remark about his wife Tracy and their relationship. While thanking all the team’s employees and their families, the papaya team boss decided to make a reference to his private life. What followed was a joke that perhaps could have been avoided: “We’ve been married for 26 years, do you see the black eye? As I said, we’ve been married for 26 years,” Zak Brown said. “No, I’m joking, the dog hit her this morning.”
English media and social networks point the finger
The comment triggered a few chuckles in the background, but also a noticeable sense of discomfort in the room, starting with the two drivers on stage with him, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Brown’s sarcasm on a particularly sensitive and delicate topic such as gender-based violence did not go unnoticed on social media, where several users openly criticized the Californian manager’s words.
A similar reaction also came from some British news outlets, most notably the Daily Mail, which highlighted Brown’s joke in a negative light, judging it excessive and in poor taste.
