Yuki Tsunoda remains determined to return to the Formula 1 grid in 2027, despite uncertainty surrounding his future and the cancellation of a potential IndyCar test with Meyer Shank Racing. The Japanese driver, currently serving as Red Bull’s reserve, has made it clear that Formula 1 remains his priority, although he is prepared to consider other racing categories if he cannot secure a seat for next season.
Honda Racing Corporation president Koji Watanabe has also addressed Tsunoda’s situation, revealing details of a conversation with the driver during the United States Grand Prix weekend in Austin. While Honda would prefer to see him remain in Formula 1, Watanabe stressed that the final decision belongs to Tsunoda and those managing his career.
Honda president Koji Watanabe discusses Yuki Tsunoda’s F1 future
Yuki Tsunoda’s future remains unresolved as he attempts to secure a return to full-time Formula 1 competition. In recent weeks, the possibility of an IndyCar test with Meyer Shank Racing had emerged as a potential alternative, but the planned outing was subsequently cancelled.
Koji Watanabe, president of Honda Racing Corporation, discussed the situation after speaking at length with Tsunoda in the paddock at the United States Grand Prix. He explained that Honda respects the driver’s independence and remains willing to help him assess his options.
“Tsunoda is a professional, and decisions about his future are up to him and his management team. I only found out afterwards that the test had been cancelled. We spoke at length in Austin, and I advised him to follow the path he believes is best. Staying in Formula 1 would be the ideal solution; otherwise, we can evaluate other possibilities together,” Watanabe explained.
The comments underline Honda’s preference for Tsunoda to remain in Formula 1, while acknowledging that alternative opportunities may need to be explored if a competitive seat does not become available.
Yuki Tsunoda insists Formula 1 remains his priority for 2027
Despite the uncertainty, Tsunoda has no intention of abandoning his Formula 1 ambitions. The Red Bull reserve driver remains focused on returning to the championship in 2027 and competing at the highest level.
However, he also recognises the importance of returning to regular racing rather than spending another extended period away from competitive action. If his efforts to secure an F1 seat are unsuccessful, he is prepared to reassess his options.
“My priority remains Formula 1, and I want to return to racing at a high level. At the same time, I can’t afford to spend another two years on the sidelines. If I don’t find a seat for next season, I’ll consider other categories. Until then, I’ll continue to focus exclusively on F1,” the Japanese driver declared.
For Tsunoda, the immediate objective is therefore unchanged: securing a place on the 2027 Formula 1 grid. His comments nevertheless make clear that he is unwilling to remain inactive indefinitely while waiting for another opportunity.
Could IndyCar become an alternative for Yuki Tsunoda?
The cancelled Meyer Shank Racing test has brought attention to the possibility of Tsunoda continuing his career in another championship. However, neither the driver nor Honda has indicated that a move to IndyCar has been agreed.
Instead, Tsunoda intends to concentrate on Formula 1 for as long as there remains an opportunity to return next season. Only if that objective proves impossible will he seriously consider competing elsewhere.
Honda’s position leaves the door open to discussing those alternatives together, while respecting the driver’s right to decide the next stage of his career.
With his future still uncertain, Tsunoda faces an important decision. For now, his determination to return to Formula 1 remains undiminished, but the prospect of another season without a race seat could eventually force him to explore a different path.
