Williams is preparing a major milestone in the development of its FW48, with a new minimum-weight chassis expected to debut at the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid. The revised design aims to eliminate the car’s excess weight, delivering a significant performance gain while also laying the foundations for the team’s 2027 Formula 1 project.
A disappointing start to the season
Williams entered the 2026 Formula 1 season with high expectations after showing encouraging progress during last year’s championship following several difficult campaigns. Many expected the Grove-based team to continue climbing the grid, but the start of the season proved far more challenging than anticipated.
Production delays prevented Williams from taking part in the opening pre-season testing sessions in Barcelona, immediately putting the team on the back foot before the championship even began.
A new chassis under development
Williams currently sits eighth in the Constructors’ Championship, but there is still optimism that the team’s fortunes can improve over the coming Grands Prix. Alongside significant investment in new engineers and technical staff, the British outfit’s biggest development project is focused on producing a completely new chassis capable of eliminating the car’s excess weight.
According to Marca, the new chassis is expected to make its competitive debut at the Spanish Grand Prix on Madrid’s new street circuit. Once introduced, the FW48 should finally reach Formula 1’s minimum weight limit of 768 kilograms.
Beyond providing an immediate performance benefit through a substantial reduction in weight, the new chassis will also serve as an important development platform for Williams’ 2027 Formula 1 programme.
More upgrades on the way
Before the lightweight chassis arrives, Williams will head to Silverstone with a fresh package of updates in addition to a special new livery for its home race.
The latest upgrade includes revisions to the nose, nose cone, floor and rear wing endplates, all designed to improve overall car balance, handling and aerodynamic load generation.
At the same time, Williams has continued to reduce the FW48’s excess weight. The car is now reportedly around 20 kilograms above the minimum weight, a notable improvement compared to the 28-kilogram surplus it carried at the start of the season, marking another important step in the team’s long-term recovery plan.
