Artificial intelligence is one of the most powerful tools of the modern era. It offers many advantages, but also comes with limitations. AI is still relatively young, meaning that while mistakes made on a personal level often have no major consequences, using it in a structured, practical and safe way within a company is significantly more complex.
This is why it is essential to know exactly what you are doing, and it is precisely for this reason that Williams has decided to appoint James Smith as its new Chief Information Officer.
Williams places artificial intelligence at the core of its processes
James Smith holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of St Andrews. He brings more than a decade of leadership experience in artificial intelligence and data analytics gained at Google, DeepMind and Human Native AI.
Williams is determined to return to the front of the Formula 1 field and, in order to achieve this goal, the team has decided to place artificial intelligence and data analysis at the heart of its long-term project. According to team principal James Vowles:
“To succeed in Formula 1, you need to be able to combine technological innovation with your people. It has always been that way. Technology is advancing at a staggering pace, so Formula 1 must also embrace artificial intelligence and look to exploit it across every department of the team. James Smith has a lot of experience in that area. I am delighted to welcome him to the Atlassian Williams F1 Team. Together we will continue to put technology at the centre of our ambitions to return to competing at the highest level,” reads the official press release.
Following this, James Smith, Chief Information Officer, added:
“I am excited to join the Atlassian Williams F1 Team. Data and artificial intelligence are becoming increasingly important in achieving peak performance, both on and off the track. Williams has an outstanding history, but what attracts me most is the ambition it has to take the next step: building the systems, products and culture needed to compete at the front. I hope to make use of my experience at Google, DeepMind and from founding Human Native to help the team move quickly, use artificial intelligence in a pragmatic way and turn complex ideas into practical advantages.”
