Laurens van Hoepen and Williams: first Formula 1 test for the Dutch driver

Dutch Formula 2 rookie Laurens van Hoepen has taken another important step in his motorsport career after completing his first Formula 1 test with Williams. The 20-year-old, who has impressed during his debut F2 season with Trident, recently got behind the wheel of a previous-generation Williams car during a private TPC (Testing of Previous Cars) session at the Hungaroring.

Strong results in his debut Formula 2 season

In his first year in Formula 2, Laurens van Hoepen has already produced several eye-catching performances. The Dutch driver began the campaign with an excellent podium finish in the Feature Race in Melbourne, securing third place during the opening weekend of the season.

He returned to the podium in Miami, delivering an even stronger result with a superb second-place finish. His progress continued in Canada, where he claimed the first pole position of his Formula 2 career. However, his Feature Race came to a premature end after a collision with the famous “Wall of Champions” during a particularly chaotic race.

First laps in a Formula 1 car

Despite that setback, Van Hoepen’s performances have not gone unnoticed. His pace and consistency have attracted the attention of Williams Team Principal James Vowles, who recently gave the young Dutchman the opportunity to experience Formula 1 machinery for the first time.

During a private test session at the Hungaroring, Van Hoepen completed several laps in a Williams Formula 1 car from previous seasons. Similar opportunities have recently been given to other promising young talents, including Leonardo Fornaroli with McLaren and Rafael Camara with Ferrari.

After completing the test, Van Hoepen shared his excitement on social media:

“First time driving a Formula 1 car: a day I will never forget!”

James Vowles’ long-term plan

According to James Vowles, there are clear reasons behind Williams’ interest in the young Dutch driver. Van Hoepen is considered one of the leading candidates to join the Williams Driver Academy, and the team principal openly acknowledged that discussions are already underway.

“Most likely,” Vowles explained, “the great thing about working directly with him is that we can evaluate his driving level firsthand. He still has areas where he can improve, but there is a reason why we are talking with him. We are in a very strong position with our Academy. You will see that we have top-level talent from top to bottom.”

The comments underline Williams’ commitment to developing future Formula 1 stars as the Grove-based team continues to strengthen its junior driver program.

In addition, James Vowles dismissed speculation surrounding the futures of Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon. The Williams team principal confirmed that both race drivers remain an integral part of the team’s long-term project and are expected to continue with the Grove outfit in the coming seasons.
