Williams achieved an impressive fifth-place finish at the Albert Park circuit in Australia with Alexander Albon. The Anglo-Thai driver collected 10 championship points in a single race, compared to the 17 points the team accumulated over the entire previous season.
This year, the Grove-based team aims to consistently compete for top-10 finishes. The FW47 appears to have made a significant step forward in performance.
The car, developed under the guidance of Pat Fry’s team, showcased a highly unusual and intriguing technical solution in Melbourne. While controversy rages over the mobility of the main plane, which allows some teams to open a gap between the main plane and the movable flap even when DRS is closed to reduce drag, Williams has taken a bold approach. The British engineers have trimmed a portion of the outer edge of the movable flap’s side support, creating a crescent-shaped cutout.
Williams is clearly seeking its own path to competitiveness, and the presence of renewed creativity in aerodynamics speaks volumes about the ambition of the James Vowles-led team to gradually climb back up the ranks.
