Williams and Carlos Sainz look to bounce back at Silverstone: “I trust our race pace”. Carlos Sainz aims to return to the top 10 at Silverstone.

Silverstone Qualifying: Sainz Beats Albon and Targets the Points
There were no Williams drivers in Q3 during qualifying at Silverstone, but due to grid penalties handed to Kimi Antonelli and Oliver Bearman, the Grove-based team will benefit from a fifth-row start, with Carlos Sainz gaining the upper hand over teammate Alexander Albon. For Carlos Sainz, Silverstone is the perfect place to reset and move on from a frustrating first half of the 2025 season—a period marked by several retirements, including a DNS (Did Not Start) in Canada, and multiple strategic errors made by the Williams team.

Now back in the United Kingdom, where he famously took his maiden Formula 1 victory, Carlos Sainz—nicknamed the “Smooth Operator”—is determined to rediscover his form and return to smiling ways. In contrast, Alexander Albon continues to struggle, qualifying only 13th and still facing difficulties building consistent momentum with the team. This time, his qualifying woes were compounded by a strategic misstep in Q1—using a fresh set of soft tyres after Franco Colapinto’s crash—and a poorly timed Q2 exit that left him stuck behind Max Verstappen, compromising his lap.

Carlos Sainz’s Post-Qualifying Comments
“I don’t think we could have hoped for much more today,” admitted Carlos Sainz after the session. “I missed out on Q3 by a fraction, but throughout the weekend we’ve consistently been running between P10 and P14, so I believe this position is a fair reflection of our current form.”

Carlos Sainz also highlighted the team’s experimental approach to setup this weekend, which made things trickier heading into qualifying: “We spent a lot of time trying different setup solutions, so it wasn’t the ideal preparation for qualifying. But in the end, I managed to put together a really clean lap.”

Looking ahead to Sunday’s race, the Spanish driver remains optimistic: “I have confidence in our race pace, and we’ll do everything we can to fight for points. We’ll be ready to take advantage of any opportunity that comes our way.”

Alexander Albon’s Post-Qualifying Comments
“We need to go back and review what happened during qualifying,” said Alexander Albon, visibly frustrated after missing out on Q3. “We fitted a new set of tyres after Franco Colapinto’s crash, then went back out at a time when a red flag seemed likely, and in the end we wasted that set.”

Albon explained how the early tyre decision affected the rest of the session: “That left us with used tyres for the first run in Q2, which actually went well, but the second run was compromised. We’ve been fast all weekend, so it’s frustrating. The car is getting quicker and quicker, and we really should have made it into Q3.”

He continued, “I’m not saying I’m entirely happy with my Q2 performance, but we’re not making life easy for ourselves. At Williams, we’re always focused on improving, and days like this show exactly where we still need to make progress.”
