Rotating Seat at Alpine
When Franco Colapinto replaced Jack Doohan in mid-May at Alpine, the French team’s press release stated that the Argentine would have five races to prove himself. This version was later contradicted by executive advisor Flavio Briatore, who told his driver to simply focus on driving fast and ignore the rest.
Four races have passed — all outside the points — and Franco Colapinto now appears to be nearing the end of his stint. According to The Race, Flavio Briatore has approached Mercedes to check the availability of Valtteri Bottas. On Saturday, Valtteri Briatore had already expressed dissatisfaction with Franco Colapinto, stating that the team had the potential to put both cars into Q3. Franco Colapinto finished only 14th, and the Argentine was urged to improve.
Why Valtteri Bottas?
Valtteri Bottas is clearly a reliable and experienced option, with 35 years of age and 12 Formula 1 seasons under his belt at Williams, Mercedes, and Alfa Romeo Sauber. He is currently the third driver at Mercedes, and a move to Alpine would be made smoother by the strong relationship between the two teams, especially since Alpine will be powered by Mercedes from 2026.
The Race reports that discussions are still in early stages, but Mercedes is open to the idea. No final decision has been made yet. Meanwhile, Alpine is trying to shake up a disappointing season that currently sees them last in the Constructors’ standings, with just 11 points in 11 races.
