The news had been circulating for some time, but it’s now official: Gabriel Bortoleto will join Nico Hulkenberg at Sauber (which will become Audi in 2026) next Formula 1 season.
This calculated risk by the Hinwil team and Mattia Binotto, who has openly admired the young Brazilian talent, comes after Gabriel Bortoleto’s success as the outgoing F3 champion and current favorite for the F2 title with two races left.
Following the official announcement, the former Ferrari team principal shared the reasons why Sauber chose Gabriel Bortoleto instead of renewing confidence in a proven driver like Valtteri Bottas.
“We’ve secured one of the great talents”
“Gabriel has already proven in the lower categories that he has what it takes to become a winning driver,” the statement from Audi read.
“We are very pleased that he will join the Sauber and Audi team. Together with Gabriel, we are on a path toward success and will evolve into a united force to shape a new era for Audi in motorsport. Nico and Gabriel represent the ideal combination of experience and youth, positioning us strongly for the future.”
Gernot Döllner, CEO of AUDI AG and Chairman of the Board of Sauber Motorsport AG, also expressed excitement about the Brazilian’s arrival: “We are currently witnessing a generational shift in Formula 1, with young drivers making an immediate impact. With Gabriel’s signing, we have secured one of these great talents. His hiring underscores Audi’s long-term strategy and commitment to Formula 1.”
