Why Fernando Alonso believes Aston Martin’s breakthrough could come after the summer break. Fernando Alonso urges patience as Aston Martin prepares for second-half push.

Fernando Alonso, 2025 F1

Fernando Alonso continues to look beyond the current championship standings and short-term results. Although Aston Martin is not expected to introduce any major upgrades before the summer break, the two-time Formula 1 world champion believes there are encouraging signs emerging within the team that could prove decisive during the second half of the season.

Progress that is not yet visible on track

The Spanish driver understands that the wait may still be a long one. The upcoming races are unlikely to deliver an immediate transformation in performance, but the work being carried out behind the scenes is giving Aston Martin reasons for optimism.

According to Fernando Alonso, the team’s engineers have developed a much clearer understanding of the car’s limitations and the specific areas that require attention if Aston Martin is to regain competitiveness. While those improvements may not yet be reflected in eye-catching results, they could provide the foundation for more meaningful progress in the future.

For now, Aston Martin appears to be focusing on building stronger long-term foundations rather than chasing short-lived gains. It is a less visible process from the outside, but one that could ultimately be crucial in restoring both performance and consistency.

A strategic decision with the future in mind

The decision to postpone major upgrades is not a sign of reduced ambition. On the contrary, the Silverstone-based team has chosen to concentrate its resources and budget on developments capable of delivering a genuine step forward, rather than introducing smaller modifications that might only reduce the deficit by a few tenths without significantly altering its position on the grid.

Fernando Alonso supports this approach and believes it is more valuable to invest time in identifying structural solutions than to pursue limited and temporary improvements that fail to address the underlying issues affecting performance.

From difficulties to renewed confidence

The past few months have not been straightforward for Aston Martin. Following the excitement of the 2023 season, when the team regularly challenged at the front and secured multiple podium finishes, rivals have continued to develop rapidly while Aston Martin has encountered difficulties in maintaining the same development trajectory.

Despite those setbacks, Fernando Alonso continues to highlight several positive developments within the organization. The team has reportedly been able to identify with greater precision the factors that have hindered the evolution of its Formula 1 car, a critical step toward returning to a path of sustained growth.

Understanding the problem is often the first stage in solving it, and Aston Martin believes the knowledge gained over recent months could prove highly valuable as future upgrades are introduced.

Patience remains the key

The two-time world champion is under no illusion that progress will happen overnight. Certain circuits may continue to expose the current weaknesses of the car, and difficult weekends could still lie ahead. Nevertheless, the objective remains clear: continue scoring valuable points, maximize every opportunity, and remain competitive until the planned upgrades arrive.

In Formula 1, however, success is often built long before it becomes visible on a race weekend. Development work, data analysis, and engineering discoveries can sometimes be just as important as the results seen on Sunday afternoons.

That is precisely the message Fernando Alonso is trying to convey. The most significant progress does not always appear immediately on the timing screens. If the deeper understanding gained by Aston Martin’s engineers can be translated into tangible performance improvements, the team could enter the second half of the 2026 Formula 1 season with ambitions far greater than those currently suggested by the championship standings.
