Bradley Lord has been appointed the new vice Team Principal of Mercedes, stepping up as Toto Wolff’s right-hand man after a long and distinguished career in Formula 1. Although often working behind the scenes, Lord is familiar to fans, frequently appearing in the garage during race weekend interviews when Wolff was unavailable.
Bradley Lord’s F1 journey
Lord’s journey in the F1 paddock began more than 25 years ago, in 2001, when he started as an intern in the Benetton team’s press office. From there, he built a strong career in communications, moving first to Renault, where he served as senior press officer from 2006 to 2007, and later working in journalism for the magazine F1 Racing.
He returned to team communications with Renault and later with Daimler, Mercedes’ parent company, in 2011. In this role, he oversaw the brand’s motorsport activities before focusing exclusively on Mercedes’ Formula 1 program starting in 2013.
Over the years, Lord took on increasingly senior positions: F1 communications lead, Mercedes-Benz Motorsport communications director in 2017, and from 2021, a key figure in strategic communications. His work has coincided with Mercedes’ most successful era, marked by multiple drivers’ and constructors’ championships.
The new role alongside Toto Wolff
His promotion to vice Team Principal represents the pinnacle of this career path. Mercedes has highlighted Lord’s central role in shaping the team’s internal culture, managing communications, and strengthening strategic cohesion.
Lord’s name has been linked to some of the team’s most intense moments, including the 2021 title battle between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen, which he experienced directly from the pit wall. In 2024, he became the team’s official representative, increasing his visibility and setting the stage for this latest promotion.
As vice Team Principal, Lord will now play a central role in the team’s operational management, working closely with Toto Wolff. His promotion also fills the gap left by Jerome d’Ambrosio two years ago, further reinforcing the team’s leadership structure as Mercedes prepares for future challenges in Formula 1.
Bradley Lord’s transition from a communications specialist to a key operational leader highlights the importance of strategic stability at Mercedes. By elevating a long-term internal veteran to the role of Deputy Team Principal, the team ensures that the core values and cultural foundation built during their championship-winning years remain at the heart of their quest to return to the top of the podium.
