When Kimi Antonelli can win the 2026 F1 title as Interlagos scenario emerges

Kimi Antonelli, Mercedes 2025 F1

Kimi Antonelli is moving ever closer to his first Formula 1 World Championship after extending his advantage over Mercedes team-mate George Russell to 84 points with second place in the Bahrain Grand Prix held in Malaysia. With seven races remaining, the mathematics surrounding when the Italian could clinch the 2026 F1 title are becoming increasingly relevant.

Kimi Antonelli himself is refusing to look that far ahead, but his championship advantage means the first mathematical opportunities are approaching. Austin represents the earliest realistic match point, while Mexico and particularly Interlagos offer intriguing possibilities later in the calendar.

Kimi Antonelli holds an 84-point F1 championship lead

Kimi Antonelli now has 320 points, with his closest rival George Russell on 236. Lewis Hamilton sits third with 214 points, while Charles Leclerc, Lando Norris and Max Verstappen also remain mathematically in contention but are further behind.

The championship situation has changed significantly in Antonelli’s favour, with George Russell already facing an increasingly difficult title challenge before the gap grew further in Malaysia.

Sepang was a difficult race for Kimi Antonelli, but the Italian still finished second behind Max Verstappen. Afterwards, he attempted to avoid thinking too much about the moment when the championship could finally be secured.

“I’m not thinking about it. Reliability problems, like George’s, happen and they can change things in an instant. We still have a lot of races ahead of us.”

Despite that caution, the title is moving closer. One particularly evocative possibility is that Kimi Antonelli could secure it at Interlagos, a circuit with considerable personal significance because of its connection to his idol, Ayrton Senna.

Austin is Kimi Antonelli’s first F1 title match point

Kimi Antonelli cannot clinch the World Championship in Singapore, meaning attention first turns towards the Austin weekend and the race on October 25.

Becoming world champion already in the United States would require an extraordinary sequence of results. To settle the championship by then, Kimi Antonelli would need to gain at least 42 points on George Russell across the three competitive opportunities before the end of the Austin Grand Prix.

The scenario described would involve Kimi Antonelli winning both the Sprint and the main race in Singapore before also taking victory in Austin, while George Russell would need to fail to score in all three.

It is mathematically possible, but sufficiently difficult that the more realistic championship focus moves towards Mexico and Brazil.

Kimi Antonelli could become world champion in Mexico

At the Mexican Grand Prix on November 1, Kimi Antonelli would need to hold an advantage of at least 101 points over George Russell to be crowned world champion.

That would require the Mercedes driver to increase his current 84-point margin by another 17 points between now and the end of the Mexican Grand Prix.

It remains a demanding scenario, but not an impossible one given the Italian’s current championship position. The latest gaps between the contenders can be followed in the Formula 1 driver standings.

Interlagos could provide a special Kimi Antonelli title moment

A potentially even more significant scenario emerges one week later at Interlagos. By the end of the Brazilian Grand Prix, the championship-clinching threshold would fall to a 76-point advantage.

That creates an especially evocative possibility for Kimi Antonelli because of his personal connection with the Brazilian circuit and Ayrton Senna.

During his first visit to Interlagos in 2025, Kimi Antonelli paid tribute to the legendary Brazilian by visiting Ayrton Senna’s grave at Morumbi Cemetery. An image of the Mercedes driver stopping there to read a book about his idol subsequently went viral.

Kimi Antonelli then left Interlagos with a second-place finish. Twelve months later, he could return to Brazil with the possibility of becoming Formula 1 world champion at the circuit most closely associated with the country of his hero.

Winning his first World Championship there would therefore provide an extraordinary sense of symmetry: one year after paying tribute to Ayrton Senna and finishing second at Interlagos, Kimi Antonelli could return with an opportunity to secure the biggest achievement of his career.

There are still seven races remaining and, as Kimi Antonelli himself emphasised, reliability can transform the championship picture very quickly. But with an 84-point advantage over George Russell, the question is gradually changing from whether the Mercedes driver can win the 2026 title to when he might be able to secure it.
