George Russell is facing growing uncertainty about his future in Formula 1 as the driver market heats up, largely due to persistent rumors linking Max Verstappen to a sensational move to Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team. If such a transfer were to materialize, it would force a major reshuffle within the team. One of the two current Mercedes drivers—either George Russell or rising star Andrea Kimi Antonelli—would have to make way. This scenario has triggered speculation about Russell’s potential alternatives for the 2026 season and beyond.
The idea of Max Verstappen leaving Oracle Red Bull Racing for a seat at Mercedes has been making headlines for weeks, especially amid internal tensions within Red Bull and increasing interest from Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff. With Mercedes still searching for a definitive successor to seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton, who joined Scuderia Ferrari for the 2025 season, Verstappen’s name has emerged as the dream target.
If Mercedes were to land the Dutchman, questions immediately arise: would they pair him with a young, unproven Kimi Antonelli, or keep the more experienced George Russell? If Russell is the one to exit, where could he go?
Former Formula 1 driver and Sky Sports pundit Johnny Herbert has shared his view on the matter. According to Herbert, George Russell could realistically target a seat at either Aston Martin or Alpine for 2026. However, both options come with caveats.
At Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team, both drivers—Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll—have already been confirmed, at least for now. The only plausible opening would come if the team decides to make a bold move by replacing one of them, possibly to prepare for their upcoming engine partnership with Honda starting in 2026.
As for BWT Alpine F1 Team, French motorsport executive Flavio Briatore has recently taken on a senior advisory role and has committed only to Pierre Gasly for the future. The second seat remains unconfirmed, which could make Alpine a viable landing spot for Russell should he become available.
Herbert emphasized that one path Russell must absolutely avoid is taking a year out of racing. “He cannot afford to sit out a season,” said Herbert. “That is usually the worst thing a driver can do. In Formula 1, things evolve so fast that even a top-tier driver like George Russell could quickly be left behind.”
According to Herbert, time off the grid could be career-threatening for someone like Russell, who remains highly regarded but would risk losing momentum in a sport that rarely waits.
To conclude, Johnny Herbert circled back to the original two scenarios, expressing a preference for a rational and strategic approach from the teams involved. “I hope common sense prevails,” Herbert stated. “If Mercedes signs Max Verstappen, then George Russell should be Aston Martin’s first choice. On the other hand, if Aston Martin were to sign Verstappen, then Mercedes should absolutely keep Russell for the future.”
It’s important to note that Aston Martin will remain a Mercedes power unit customer until the end of the 2025 Formula 1 season. Starting in 2026, however, the team will transition to a new engine partnership with Honda, which could influence their driver selection strategy moving forward.
As the 2025 Formula 1 season progresses, the future of George Russell is becoming one of the key storylines in the driver market. Whether he remains with Mercedes, moves to another top team, or faces the unthinkable prospect of being sidelined, the next few months will be decisive for the British driver known for his consistency, speed, and leadership potential.
