George Russell receives an important piece of advice in the event Max Verstappen joins him at Mercedes
In recent days, speculation has intensified about the possibility of Max Verstappen teaming up with George Russell at Mercedes. Such a scenario would likely result in a temporary departure for young Italian driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who would be sent to gain experience with another team for one or two seasons before making his full-time debut with the German outfit. Meanwhile, for Russell, an important warning has arrived—especially regarding the challenge of going head-to-head with the reigning World Champion from the Netherlands.
Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has confirmed that formal announcements are expected to take place during the upcoming summer break. In recent reports, it has emerged that both Toto Wolff and Max Verstappen have been spending time in Sardinia, possibly to hold discussions regarding the Dutch driver’s future in Formula 1. While the mutual interest between the two parties is clear, it remains to be seen whether talks will lead to a definitive agreement.
Nigel Mansell’s Perspective
1992 Formula 1 World Champion Nigel Mansell weighed in on the situation, offering guidance to George Russell on how to handle the potential arrival of a dominant teammate like Max Verstappen at Mercedes. As is well known within the paddock, relations between Russell and Verstappen are not particularly warm, and sharing a garage could heighten tensions between the two.
“What I can say to George, to Lando, and to all the young drivers is that I raced alongside four World Champions during my career,” Mansell explained in an interview with AceOdds. “I joined teams where the other driver was already a World Champion. I drove alongside Mario Andretti, Nelson Piquet, Keke Rosberg, and Alain Prost.”
“When you enter a team where there’s already a World Champion, they’re not your best friend. And if you start being faster, don’t expect them to become one. You are the number two driver, and they hate being beaten. That’s exactly why they are World Champions. I had one of the toughest careers in a way, because I was always the underdog.”
“But as I proved, if you work hard enough, you can beat them and build your own reputation. George experienced that last year against Lewis Hamilton, and I believe he did a magnificent job.”
Nigel Mansell’s message to Russell is a clear one: even when up against the most elite drivers on the grid, resilience, work ethic, and self-belief can carve a path to success. Should Verstappen land at Mercedes, George Russell will need to brace himself for one of the most intense intra-team rivalries Formula 1 has seen in years.
